Remembering Gareth Thomas
sweevo
Today would have been Gareth's 72nd birthday - I choose to remember him for his varied roles, his charisma and his courtesy, and I am happy to have met him (Return to Gauda Prime 1 - 22 October 2011).

Happy birthday, Gareth... wherever you are.

My lasting memory of Mr Thomas goes back to Edgecon in 1982.
An interesting convention as we had to go between two venues. Which caused quite a stir when half of the attendees were all dressed up and going across the road for the dressing up parade!!
Anyway, come Sunday night (it was a two day affair) I was waiting in the pub for Dearest to come and get me and he arrived saying that we would have to wait awhile as the traffic was sooooo bad.
So he and I plus a few others who were in the same boat, sat in the pub.....when who should walk in but Mr Thomas with his wife, saying the exact same thing about the traffic!
We invited him to join us to wait for the traffic to die down...and we all ended up eating all the sandwiches that the pub had, plus indulging in a bit of a drink....or two.
Dearest ended up buying Mr Thomas a pint!!!
So cheers, Mr Thomas. I hope the pubs, wherever you are, never run dry.
Cold.....you don't know the meaning of cold.
Cold is when you have ice on the INSIDE of the window!!!

I will never forget meeting the frail Mr Thomas at Cygnus Alpha 1. It was such a long day, the queues were huge and seemed never ending...it was hot...we were all tired. But he stayed to the end contributing to a brilliant panel..funny...affectionate...gracious. I was extremely moved and full of admiration for the way he went out of his way to engage with us fans. It was my first convention, I had never been a Blake fan, but I fell for him on the spot and would have followed him into battle against the Federation any day. Journey well Gareth.
Just because I can't sing doesn't mean I won't.

There are so many memories for me of Gareth. But I would have to say the best memory was when we met him for the second time and he remembered our names and when we got our photo taken with him he gave me a kiss on the lips and then turned to Brad and shook his hand, saying he wasn't going to kiss him! Such a fun and gracious man. And I miss him every day.

You're all so lucky to have met him and known him. From everyone's accounts here, he seemed very down-to-earth, a wonderful and generous person with a good sense of humor.

My memory of Gareth comes from the original Who’s 7 convention in Telford in 1992.

As a penniless student, I slept overnight in one of the video rooms. There were several – I chose the B7 video room. I think Gareth was the very last to leave the bar. By that time, everyone else had retired. I was asleep in the video room. As he walked past the room, I stirred. And I heard Gareth crack a joke: “You can tell that’s the Blake’s 7 video room; they’re all fast asleep!”.

A warm and funny man, who was generous with his time. The organisation at the first Cygnus Alpha convention was, quite frankly, a shambles. But as Annie has mentioned, Gareth, Michael and Brian stayed behind and made sure the con went out on a fun note.

Gareth was the ultimate gentleman. At every event he always thanked people for attending, he would take time to sign autographs outside of the normal sessions and happily talk to people in the bar even in the early hours of the morning on all kinds of things.

I have so many memories of GT, most of which involve conventions, from my first convention in Telford, sitting on the periphery listening to one of his stories, to providing him with a steady supply of Tennant's at on of the later Who'7 Cons, to getting stuck in a lift with both him and David Jackson in Deliverance. However, I also had the pleasure of going to see him in Cadfael in Guildford which I enjoyed immensely.

An amazing actor, an easy to look after con guest and a laugh a minute, we are so lucky to have such a wonderful fan friendly cast. Someone recently posted a link from a Who's 7 panel with both Paul and Gareth. (Ashford I think) What a double act. Basically that high persisted all weekend!

Best memory was having an ice cream with him at the Longleat Dr Who convention, helped his wife set up her makeup and effects exhibit. Wonderful!

I regret that I never got the chance to meet him, but I love hearing all the stories from people who did. We have such an amazing fandom.

Lovely stories in remembrance of Gareth!
Thank you for sharing.
I hope to hear many more about this wonderful actor and his kind attitude towards his fans at Blake con, please?
I wish I had been able to have a chat/drink with him.

Absolutely lovely man, perfect host at a convention, always concerned that we the fans were having a great time and he was never unavailable to us.

Outside of any convention duties you would find him chatting, drinking, telling stories, smoking and laughing, he must have been exhausted by the end of an event.

I may have mentioned this before but at one event, a Who's 7 event I think, he was chatting to some friends and myself in a public area, we were attentively listening to an anecdote of his when a reporter came up and interrupted, quite rudely, insisting that Gareth should come away with him for a photoshoot/interview that he wanted to do.

Now we all perfectly understood that Gareth would/should have to go, I think it was for Starburst magazine or the like, any exposure/publicity for an actor is important, but Gareth told the reporter to politely "Piss Off" and he would be there when he had finished talking to his friends!

Talk about feeling chuffed, we were amazed that he would put us first. I think that sums up Gareth for me in a nutshell, a genuine gentleman.

Much more recently when the Cygnus Alpha event over ran he stayed on well beyond his time to do the last interview of the day along with Brian Croucher and Michael Keating, it was fantastic that they did this and was very much appreciated by the audience.

So here is to remembering Gareth, and thanking him for being so good to us, his fans.

- Andy

Thank you for those who have shared their memories, keep them coming.

Here is the link to my Edgecon pics.
I can't see a Tarrant anywhere unless you were hiding!
I shall search my B7 monthly piccies and upload them to my Edgecon Album.
I know that dear Alex Delicado often dressed as Tarrant, but not this time. He's in the photo with us all by the car and he is dressed in gold.

Wonderful photos, Littlesue - thank you for sharing!

I wasn't at Edgecon in '82. I wasn't living in the UK - in fact, I'd never seen any B7! Looks like you all had a fab time.

As you can see, there was a disco..note the bobble things on me and Penny Thacker's heads. I'm afraid we were at the sherry a bit and danced until about midnight to 'I fell in love with a Starship Trooper'.
Us slightly older fans were on the phones in the reception at just after 9pm on the Saturday to wish our children goodnight...and then we had a quick snooze before more sherry and more dancing!!
Oh what it was to be young back then!!!

Hi Sue that's me! The young Tarrant! Thank you for uploading, such happy memories..
.Met a girl there called Rosalind who was dressed as an elemental Sapphire, went out with her for a time.
Think the kinky leather couple were called Donna and Alan, she hosted a few cons later, I remember getting an autograph from Gareth, have a pic of him and me there somewhere, my friends Peter Anghelides and Peter Lovelady are pictured too. I wrote several stories and novelised Shadow for their Frontier Worlds Fanzines -one of the stories A Man called Blake became the Mark of Kane audio play much later.
Thank you, best Dave

That's Rosalind with the big silver head, she was a lot prettier without it!
