40th Anniversary Rewatch - D10 Gold
trevor travis
The episode: Derek Ten - Gold (Carry On Photocopying)
The date: Tuesday, November 27th, 2018
The time: 7.45pm UK time

Starring Paul Darrow, Michael Keating, Steven Pacey, Josette Simon, Glynis Barber, Peter Tuddenham and Peter Tuddenham as Avon's 7, plus Roy Kinnear and a mysterious ex-president in high heels… who could it be?

Join us for a wonderful heist story, in which the crew have descended into common criminality… which was always going to happen at some point. Also there’s 10 bonus points to anyone who manages to get a photocopy of Soolin’s bum.

Well now, there's no ifs, ands, or BUTTS about that photo!

Or how about a Batman type ending.. "Is this the END of our heroes? Stay tuned, same Bat time, same Bat channel!"

I was looking at this on morning break at work when the peace was shattered by the shocked cry of: "are they wearing trousers?!" It was a bit embarrassing in front of a kitchen full of policemen...

I vaguely remembered this episode as being a fun, smart heist on my first watch. Didn't expect to get so depressed and sad when I rewatched it. It hit me almost as bad as "Orbit" because I could see how "Orbit" would follow from it, with Avon feeling like nothing mattered anymore. It's the beginning of the end.

I was scared by Avon and for Avon here. He looked burned down to cinder right from the start, and that laugh in the end just did it.

And I thought that his "they are not my gang, we just stick together for mutual convenience" was him desperate about having the responsibility for those people, about having to be a leader who had to keep them alive against impossible odds. I had a flashback to Blake's "I don't like responsibility either" in "Deliverance".

Also this one got me very upset with unfairness of it all. Servalan got the moment of grace in "Sand" before the end, had a nice moment with Tarrant who's still retained his innocence and humanity. But Avon - she sucked it all out of him in "Terminal", and he didn't get any reprieve until the end.
She's like a vampire - she's drawn to humanity in her partners. And then she gets them killed, or worse - empty and burned, like Avon. Damn, this show is brutal, and the worst it still to come!

yes, this episode is all a bit twisty turny with regards to plot... I'm never 100% sure why they're doing this heist in the first place - let alone carry on with it after it gets tricksy! Maybe having all that money aboard Libby went to Avons head and he wants the same again? Who knows!!
But yes... Avon is getting very fraught by this point in the series... he is not a natural leader.
