42nd Anniversary Rewatch - B11 Gambit
trevor travis
The episode: Barney Eleven – Gambit (Carry On Space Gambling)
The date: Tuesday, June 16th, 2020
The time: 7.45pm UK time

In which Blake’s continuing attempts to find Star One are completely overshadowed by: (1) Avon and Vila going on a gambling spree with the help of baby Orac, (2) Servie as the Lady In Red, (3) Travis, who seems to be playing a wronged hero from a western. Now, where’s my chess set?

Episode in a word: OTT.
Characters to cheer: The Lady In Red. Servie is simply wonderful in the hands of Robert Holmes – pass that dictionary! Krantor and Toise are a great double act, while Avon and Vila trying to play innocent in the final scene is a hoot. Even the minor characters in this are terrific, such as the sadistic Klute, the scene-stealing Croupier, and of course, Servie's rather thick powder puff.
Character to boo: Blake for not killing Travis at the end – a decision that nearly ended in the galaxy being conquered by aliens.
Recognisable Faces: Aubrey Woods (Krantor) played the Controller in “Day Of The Daleks”, a Doctor Who serial from 1972. In that he's also under silver make-up. I’m sure I also recognise the voice of John Leeson (Toise) from somewhere. If he said “Master” or “Mistress”, it might help me remember where from! Let's ask Pasco if he knows.
Is Soolin looking lovely this week?: Yes.
Best line: “When the Federation finally cleans out this cesspit, I shall have that vulpine degenerate eviscerated with a small and very blunt knife.”

Blake's 7 will return in… Carry On Space Camping

Where they also bump into Vila and Avon, and they all have to keep quiet to Blake at the end Wink

Here's the difference between Jenna being with Blake, and Avon being with Blake.

TRAVIS [Snatching the arm] All right, Blake, if you're man enough, kill me now.
BLAKE Our quarrel is with the Federation, not with you.
JENNA (Raises hand)Give me the gun, then.
BLAKE That would be mercy. Are you feeling particularly merciful?
JENNA: (Lowers hand.)

TRAVIS [Snatching the arm] All right, Blake, if you're man enough, kill me now.
BLAKE Our quarrel is with the Federation, not with you.
AVON BANG!
TRAVIS (Falls down and bleeds a lot) - Galaxy saved.

Perhaps, if Jenna had better writing done on her character, she may have done it differently. Ditto Cally, with the glimpses we get of her rebel ideals, she and Blake would have made a more dynamic team versus the rest of the crew in some respects.

Hello all: sorry I won't be with you this week because.....IT'S MY BIRTHDAY and I am being forced into a weird socially distanced partyish sort of thing that includes an outdoor barbecue in the rain and pass the parcel (bomb?) that an offspring has contributed but which nobody has yet worked out how to do from 2m apart. On the other hand, my home-made elderflower bubbly is brilliant.
Sorry I can't share any of it with you!

Have fun with Gambit tonight - the cast certainly did. Servalan is looking particularly brilliant too.
You're not sulking, I hope?

If they had wired the speed chess seats the wrong way round, me might have ended up with fried Moloch!

I reckpn fried Moloch must taste like chicken. Not a lot of meat on the bone, though...
