42nd Anniversary Rewatch - C1 Aftermath
trevor travis
The episode: Colin One Aftermath (Carry On Doing Watersports)
The date: Tuesday, July 7th, 2020
The time: 7.45pm UK time

In which we can get out our stopwatches to record the length of the Intergalactic War; the fates of Vila and Cally are left in the balance, while Blake and Jenna go the other way; Avon moves to top billing and gets to snog both Dayna and Servie; the local Rent-A-Tribe take their Annual Leave to go to Bamburgh for two weeks; Servie shoots a blind man in the back; and some curly-haired chap turns up in the closing seconds.

Episode in a word: Aftermath (cant beat the episode title in this case).
Characters to cheer: Dayna is immediately likeable, while Jacs smoulders as Servie in this episode. That week must just be worth it.
Character to boo: Chel needs one of those stress balls, to help him chill out a bit.
Is Soolin looking lovely this week?: Yes.
Recognisable Face, or rather voice: Cy Grant (Hal Mellanby) was Lieutenant Green in Captain Scarlet. How cool is that? I dont think he can be related to Del Grant, since hes not ginger. Oh, and look out for the cameo by Captain Mike Yates and the Tereptil Leader (both from Doctor Who) as doomed Federation Guards.
Best exchange: MELLANBY: You were magnificent. AVON: Not from where I was sitting.

Blake's 7 will return in Carry On Space Nurse

Not forgetting the two onlookers who, according to Uncle Vere at Teal Vandor, were the only people NOT to hear the request to keep clear as we are filming!!!
i.imgur.com/yWYXwD4.jpg

They were only noticed in the editing suite and it was far too late to go back up north and reshoot the whole scene, not to mention too costly.

Wonderful LOLs, Huggy and Brad!

As for only noticing things in the edit suite (or cutting rooms as those places were then known) - it does happen, and if there's nothing can be done about it, we just hold our breath and hope the audience doesn't notice. These are among the ones that happened to me:

- Crew reflected in a mirror (ep of Granada's 'El C.I.D.' ).
- Reveal of modest knickers on character supposed to be naked in bed (ep of YTV's 'Between the Sheets' ).
- Black bruised thumbnail on hand double for Helen Mirren ('Prime Suspect 2'. The thumbnail was mine).

We were able to fix the knickered non-nakedness in the edit because there were alternative shots - but we didn't spot it until it was pointed out to us quite late in post production. We had to live with the other bloopers.

Further details available upon request!

Of course, in 1978, when people were watching on 19 inch low def tellys, it was much more likely to go unnoticed. They didn't even have to worry about limitless rewatches on VHS in those days, and DVD or digital hi def was science fiction.

Now days they can fix the bloopers with CGI *if* they have the time and budget for it.

I seem to recall that Uncle Vere had brought a reel of film of that sequence from Aftermath and it was put on the projector (no DVDs around back in 1981, at least not there!). He ran it through and we all watched it on a large screen and then Uncle Vere wanted to know if we had seen them?
So they rewound the film and ran it again with Uncle Vere saying watch the dunes in the background...and that's when we all saw these guys!!! I never spotted it on the actual episode when I saw it TV in 1980!!!
My fave memory from Teal Vandor, apart from meeting Mr D for the first time, was hugging Uncle Vere and saying 'I love this man!' because he had said that I didn't look old enough to have two children!!!Grin

Me too, Im afraid- I have a real live friend coming to stay! Not certain I can persuade her to start watching B7 tonight. Especially as to stay two metres apart in my living room only one of us would be able to see the screen...

I started with Aftermath in 1980. It is a very, very good episode to start with. Give her a go Wink

Iain Short
I'd say out of all 52, Aftermath is the best of best episodes to start from as a first viewing. I could of course be a little bit biased. It's what I did - 40 years ago thanks to a VHS video recorder.

Iain Short
And if you knew how much my Mum had to save to get that VHS and the tapes from Radio Rentals! Sheesh - I don't think my little sister ever wore any new clothes. Or even nappies.
