Do you think the series would have been as successful without Avon?
AvonGirl
Been thinking about this today and I really don't think it would. Without Avon I think you would definitely still have a very good and gritty series, but you would lose the most interesting and complex character. It would be like Star Trek without Spock.

His love/hate relationship with Blake is the heart of the series. I also don't think it would have been as successful if the character had been included but Paul had never been cast in the role. I think the way Paul plays Avon is a big part of why the character is so popular, not so sure another actor could have done what he did with the character.

Exactly why I've never been keen on the idea of a remake.

Exactly! I'm not a fan of remakes and reboots in general and I definitely don't want anyone doing either to Blake's 7.

...as demonstrated in the 'Rebellion Reborn' reboot audios. Despite top notch actors - Colin Salmon as Avon! - and good fx etc, it just wasn't B7.

IMO, if a TV series or movie is an adaptation of original novel/s like James Bond or Sherlock Holmes or Poirot, then you can have lots of different actors, and choose who your faves are (Sean Connery/Roger Moore, Jeremy Brett and David Suchet are mine). However, if it's an original TV series, with the exception of Doctor Who, then the character is defined by the actor who first plays that role, and can't really be replaced.
My views are my own.

VILA: I'm entitled to my opinion.
AVON: It is your assumption that we are entitled to it as well that is irritating.

No, definitely not. To the proverbial 'man in the street' or non-fan viewer, who tends to remember specific things or people, Blake's 7 seems to have been as much about Avon/Paul as anything or anyone else.

Just like that!
If these characters had been portrayed by other actors, the series would undoubtedly have had a very different "feel," perhaps stronger, perhaps weaker, and what might then linger the most in the memory could be the beautiful spaceship Liberator, or the cocky computers Zen and Orac.

Tarrant On TV
Successful? Maybe.
As good? Probably not.

By accident or by design, he ended up being the quintessential character of the series.

Their chemistry is beautifully balanced. So many good scenes with each pairing.
