The Champions Rewatch Episode 15 – The Gilded Cage
Time to dust off your box sets again (or even YouTube) for Episode 15 of the series on Sunday 13th June at 9pm.
The episode: The Gilded Cage
Written by Philip Broadley and directed by ….YAY Good old Cyril is back!!!
Starring the ever so suave, smooth John Carson...he and Mr Fredericks AKA Carnell could have a smooth fest to see who was the smoothest!!!
The lovely Jennie Linden as the lovely Samantha
And Ensor Jr…Tony Caunter (who has a run in with baby blue eyes, but thankfully, doesn’t end up being thrown through a window like the others). One Spare Part has decided that Richard is working on the side for Everest Windows as so far at least three baddies have ended up flying through a window. Will this occur again?
Maybe not as the window in question has bars…
So here we are, the 15th episode...and we are halfway through. What? Already??
So to the Episode..which is Richard’s tour de force this time as he is kidnapped (by the afore mentioned Ensor Jr) and wakes up in a room with the barred windows, handy record player and some sort of black statue which reminds me of the Martian monster that appears over London in the end scenes of Quatermass and the Pit!
A warning for One Spare Part: Our 2nd Mr Smooth has not only nicked Richard’s lovely cardie…but also his shoes! Yes, Richard’s tootsies are on show as he pads about his room clad in jimjams and a nice satin like dressing gown!
Then the lovely Samantha walks in to our hero’s boudoir and presents him with a menu. I had no idea what they were talking about back in 68/69 as I was but a 14/15 year old…but now, I have a pretty good idea…..
Anyway. I digress, Craig is sent to locate our poor, kidnapped hero who is at the mercy of the lovely waitress with her menu and does a neat turn as a central heating salesman and for all the world looks and sounds like Christopher Reeve as Clarke Kent.
By the way, the lovely waitress seems to live in THAT mews where the peanut seller from To Trap a Rat lived.
We have a bit of culture in this episode as it seems one of Richard’s fave Lps (remember them?) is the one entitled The Four Seasons which he plays on his stereo gram. (Remember them? We had one back in the day…) and that is the music playing when Craig comes looking for him.
And we get to see Richard’s pad (with the stereo gram) and his relaxed agent out of a suit look...see the above about a cardie!
And Sharron? A fleeting appearance..but what an appearance, clad in a bikini as she tries to help Craig remember the van registration plate (in which poor Richard, in a rolled up carpet, was being taken to his doom.)
So what does the 2nd Mr Smooth want Richard to do?
Decode a code by all accounts…so no ex Nazis, or iron curtain types or even a bamboo curtain involved, but I’m sure they will be back.
Pigeons play an important part in this episode. I wonder how long it took to film before Richard managed to get a hold of one, as I get the feeling that several were being ‘thrown’ into the window set.
And is the lovely Samantha wearing almost the same red outfit as Prof Quatermass’ fiancée in The Ghost Plane? Could be, or they both shop at C & A Modes.
Finally, I don’t think any pigeons were harmed in the making of this episode, and no windows were smashed by flying stuntmen either.
Cold.....you don't know the meaning of cold.
Cold is when you have ice on the INSIDE of the window!!!

Blimey, there's a lot going on in this 'ere episode. Naked tootsies aside, I am looking forward to seeing Richard locked up. I am sure he will use the time he spends imprisoned wisely: working out his commission for Everest Windows.
