40th Season D Anniversary Rewatch - D1 Rescue
trevor travis
Yay, we’ve been reprieved for another season (thank you Mr Continuity Announcer and also Bill Cotton), which means 13 more episodes of jolly japes and fun, as we commence our 40th anniversary rewatch of Season Derek, watching the episodes on their exact original date of transmission!

The episode: Derek One – Rescue (Carry On Space Sea Devil)
The date: Tuesday, September 28th, 2021
The time: 7.45pm UK time

Before we go any further, it’s time to introduce the Season Derek drinking game:

Here’s the number of sips/swigs per each of these:
Avon is knocked unconscious 1
A scientist dies (per scientist) 5
A member of the main cast wears the same costume as last week (per costume) 2
There’s the sequence (or part of the sequence) of Scorpio landing / taking off at Xenon Base 3
Vila drinks something red (per scene) 10
Tarrant falls in love 5
Soolin shoots someone (per person) 5
Slave says “sorry” (each mention) 1
Each mention of “Sleer” 2
Avon laughs manically and/or smiles inappropriately 5
There’s a downbeat ending in sharp contrast to the jangly end theme 10
The final shot of the episode includes Paul Darrow 3
A member of the main cast is killed or stunned (per cast member) 1 bottle of wine / 1 can of beer

Back to Rescue, and the crew manage to get off Terminal, but not before Cally goes to pieces (sob!). Meanwhile, none of the crew have ever watched the film The Picture of Dorian Gray, as otherwise they would have worked out the plot much, much quicker; a certain blonde lady gunslinger appears for the first time (the Red Dwarf crew are still in constant orbit around a planet which looks like her bottom); and Avon goes bathing (steady!).

Episode in a word: Escape.
Character to cheer: Vila for dragging Tarrant out of the underground complex, which couldn’t have been easy. He would have risked his life again for Cally, had the hatch not closed. He saves the day at the end of the episode as well, albeit in a somewhat drunken stupor.
Character to boo: Avon shows no remorse for the consequences of his actions in the previous episode. I think I preferred Blake’s self-pity and manipulation in “Trial”.
Is Soolin looking lovely this week: Yes.
Recognisable Face: Bruno Tonioli (the dead young man that the Sea Devil becomes after its been shot) is very famous in the UK as one of the judges of Strictly Come Dancing.
Best line: “There's something very suspicious about a man who keeps his booze under lock and key.”

Blake's 7 will return in… Carry On Space Rent-A-Tribe.

Dear Mum,

Well, this is another fine mess Avon has gotten us into. No ship. No way off this miserable planet, and no telepath. I miss Cally already. Now who is going to keep Avon in line? Tarrant? I don’t think so. Why did I rescue Tarrant? I should have rescued Cally.

At least the explosions hammered Terminal into a round shape. It was oblong last week.

Fortunately, a salvager picked us up. He has a secret base, a ship, lots of wine, and a pretty blonde assistant. What’s not to like about him? Plenty. He makes my teeth itch. For one thing he keeps his wine locked up. Only a real creep does that. But at least he fixed Orac so I can send these letters.

We got away from Terminal just as it broke up. One thing, why does an artificial planet have lava?

I told you Dorian was a creep. He kept a Sea Devil in his cellar. Avon shot it. Only, it wasn’t a Sea Devil, it was Bruno from Strictly in a Sea Devil costume. Dorian took it hard. About as hard as Dracula took getting a stake through the heart.

Now we have Dorian’s base, Dorian’s ship, and Dorian’s wine. Now, where did that pretty blonde assistant get to?

Love, Vila
Men of Harlech cease your dreaming, can't you see their street signs gleaming...

Another season, another 13 letters from Vila. Brilliant Brad! But how is he going to send the letters after Orbit? He's not going to trust Orac after that! Wink

A reminder that our 40th anniversary rewatch starts TONIGHT with Rescue!

V Restal Esq has confirmed he's joining in with our drinking game!

Bear in mind what possibly might happen in the opening 5 minutes of Rescue and this:

A member of the main cast is killed or stunned (per cast member) 1 bottle of wine / 1 can of beer

So, yes, known location of wine cellar is preferred Wink

Sadly, work prevented me from joining you all for last night, and I cannot possibly start series 4 without seeing Terminal. So... Mr GMM and I are going to watch them this evening and hopefully we’ll be back on track for next week!

Avon, Anna Grant and Servie know of another wine cellar - I'll ask them for the keys for you Wink Don't be put off by the chains - or use them on your dearest so that you can watch the episode in peace Shock Grin Grin

Does this include the previously mentioned Avon being knocked unconscious?

Nah, that's a single swig.

The "stun" provision is there for "Blake", for those who claim they'll not really dead.

How about Tarrant in Rescue? We're not sure if he's wounded, tired, or lost the season four drinking game with Vila.

I wonder, if this time, we will see that missing scene. The one where a certain rather nice computer expert goes to have a bath.
I still can't find the scene from ROD when he went to get cleaned up. It must be on that DVD somewhere....

Single swig for Tarrant.

Obviously a full bottle/can when (SPOILERS) Cally gets blown to Kingdom Come.

Hello all. Now for this episode I want a personal guarantee that no Sea Devils were harmed in the making of this story!
