40th Season D Anniversary Rewatch - D4 Stardrive
trevor travis
The episode: Derek Four – Stardrive (Carry On Space Petrol Heads)
The date: Tuesday, October 19th, 2021
The time: 7.45pm UK time

A reminder of the Season Derek drinking game:

Here’s the number of sips/swigs per each of these:
Avon is knocked unconscious 1
A scientist dies (per scientist) 5
A member of the main cast wears the same costume as last week (per costume) 2
There’s the sequence (or part of the sequence) of Scorpio landing / taking off at Xenon Base 3
Vila drinks something red (per scene) 10
Tarrant falls in love 5
Soolin shoots someone (per person) 5
Slave says “sorry” (each mention) 1
Each mention of “Sleer” 2
Avon laughs manically and/or smiles inappropriately 5
There’s a downbeat ending in sharp contrast to the jangly end theme 10
The final shot of the episode includes Paul Darrow 3
A member of the main cast is killed or stunned (per cast member) 1 bottle of wine / 1 can of beer

Back to the episode, and there’s a highly dramatic beginning and end… but lots of long, lingering shots of a certain computer expert, a certain pilot and a certain blonde lady gunslinger in the middle (steady!). And all those knocks to the head in “Power” seem to have affected Avon’s memory – he can’t remember the scientist he killed 15 seconds earlier. Oh, and we learn a very important lesson. Never pop out to the toilet at a vital time. Dr Plaxton’s assistant does that and by the time he’s back, the Stardrive is gone, Dr Plaxton is gone and he’s left to the mercy of the Space Rats.

Episode in a word: Speed.
Characters to cheer: It simply has to be Vila. I love the scene where he pretends to be drunk, where he reveals how they can survive, while avoiding doing the dirty work himself.
Character to boo: Orac. The damn thing had spotted the Space Rats’ vehicle, but won’t tell the crew and makes them watch through the whole thing frame-by-frame to spot it themselves. It’s about time they took Vila’s advice and redesigned Orac into a drink dispenser.
Is Soolin looking lovely this week: Yes.
Recognisable Face: Barbara Shelley (Dr Plaxton) was the leading lady of Hammer Horror.
Best exchange: VILA: “Friends? Space Rats? There's no such thing as a friend of a Space Rat -- they even hate each other.” TARRANT: “What else do you know about them?” VILA: “They're maniacs, psychopaths! All they live for is sex and violence, booze and speed. And the fellas are just as bad.”

Blake's 7 will return in “Carry On Og, Saviour Of The Universe.”

Mum,

We bumped into an asteroid. Never a good thing. Never knew how Old Uncle Han always avoided them. He made it look so easy. I knew how to fix the damage of course, but how to mention it without volunteering. There are many times I’ve faked being sober, but this was the first time I faked being drunk. Lucky for me I had so much practice.

While the ‘volunteers’ were fixing the drive, three pursuit ships appeared. Something moving very fast, and with a great big gun, blew them out of the sky quicker than Liberator ever could have.

Speaking of uncles, do you remember Great Great Uncle Max? (I know, never use his nickname, he doesn’t like it, it makes him Ma… upset. We ran into some old friends of his, or their bargain basement spin offs. Yes, I’m talking about Space Rats.

Since our main drive was so knackered, we decided to steal… er… negotiate to purloin, er Purchase, one of theirs. I just wish we had procured, yes, I like the word procured, very ambiguous from a legal point of view, I wish we had procured one of their canons, the one that blew up three pursuit ships faster than Liberator ever could have.

If Jenna were with us, I bet she would have just stolen one of their bikes WITH the stardrive AND the cannon. Remember when I was playing drunk to avoid volunteering. And Avon never noticed that I had miraculously sobered up as soon as the job was done. He did, however, notice I was sober when I was talking about the Space Rats, and so I was ‘volunteered’ to make contact.

In the end, we ‘procured’ the Stardrive and ‘liberated’ Doctor Plaxton… for a little while… I don’t want to talk about it. I just hope I’m never on a small ship with Avon when it comes down to him or me.

Love, Vila.

PS, I’ve just had a thought, I wish I’d stop doing that, but I just had a thought. Maybe Avon isn’t as cold as he seems. Maybe Doctor Plaxton’s first name was Hu.

PPS I’ve just had another thought. Scorpio is a freighter. How will her hull stand up to the new drive. Seems to me it’s like putting a formula one engine in the family car. Could get nasty.

PPPS Avon tells me I should stop having thoughts now. It only complicates things.
Men of Harlech cease your dreaming, can't you see their street signs gleaming...

You’ll have to let us know how well they work by seeing how that rather nice computer expert looks through them...

Good Evening. I have gin. Will need it.

I love this episode now, but 40 years ago I thought this episode started to make the series go very badly wrong. Which was not helped by next week. Except for Og obviously. Love a good Ogging.

Hi folks. Hope you're all well.
Space Rats, AKA 'Back in a quarry again' - I bet the costumes people hated it - so much mud to clean off!
You're not sulking, I hope?

Isn't that what TT does to a certain blonde sharpshooter?

"i'm very sorry Sir but that was the backup system".

40 years ago I was lying on the floor crying with laughter. My Mother was similarly laughing. Dad looked at me, looked at Mum, then moved to the other sofa.
