UK Rewatch - A1 The Way Back (Tuesday, January 7th)
trevor travis
The episode: Albert One - The Way Back (Carry On Child Molesting)
The date: Tuesday, January 7th, 2025
The time: 7.45pm UK time

An absolute belter to begin with!

Roj Blake finds about his past, while virtually everyone is in on the conspiracy, and almost all of the good guys who you think might become one of "Blake's Seven" end up dead. Terry Nation loved his doom-laden opening episodes! Vila, who plays a very minor role in this episode, provides the only comic relief, and even he's a darker character than in later episodes.

Episode in a word: Grim.
Character to cheer: Tel Varon is a nice guy, and the only person in the Justice Department who seems to be after proper justice. Guess what happens to him?
Character to boo: Morag is only in a couple of scenes, but she's the one who cooks up the way to discredit Blake, by fabricating evidence that he's a child molester. She's probably President by the time of Series Derek.
Is Soolin looking lovely this week: Yes.
Recognisable Face: Jeremy Wilkin (Dev Tarrant) played a baddie in the Doctor Who serial, "Revenge Of The Cybermen". But there's LOTS of other people in "The Way Back" who are in other stuff.
Best line: Not the quote-fest of some subsequent episodes (the strength of this episode is in other areas), so I'll go with: "They didn't give me a choice. I steal things. Compulsive, I'm afraid. I've had my head adjusted by some of the best in the business. But it just won't stay adjusted."

Blake’s 7 will return in… Carry On Convict
Vote Og.

From the Electronic Journal of 'Roj Bear.'

Dear reader, I call you dear, even though I don’t know you, and if you know me, it is only by reputation. The Boss has never given me a proper name, but most of you will know me best by the name ‘Roj Bear,’ a wholly inaccurate moniker, as I have nothing whatsoever to do with anyone named Roj, and am quite obviously bear shaped, though, in fact, I am a slightly animatronic bear shaped cuddly with superior artificial intelligence.

The Boss designed me when he was a wee lad, (proof of his superior intelligence, which I gladly serve), and has kept me ever since. Given that The Boss is highly rational and wholly unsentimental, I am sure he has kept me around for purely practical reasons. This is fine with me, though I wouldn’t mind the occasional cuddle. It is the primary function of my kind, after all.

I now find myself stuffed inside the boss’s leather jacket, not for the first time, and while I suppose this technically counts as a cuddle, I can tell you it ain’t half hot in here, as our cellmates say.

Cell mates? Yes, the boss and I are awaiting deportation to a penal colony. I suspect there will be a stark lack of cuddling. You see, the boss was doing a lot of cuddling with this lady, I think her name was Anna (It’s hard to hear from the closet). Things went south, as the lower grades say, there was some gunfire, and here we are. I do not know what happened to the lady, but The Boss has been melancholy ever since. (You have to know him well, to tell).

Best wrap up as the next cell over is starting to board the transport. Peeking out, I see a curly haired gent with keen eyes (definitely not the cuddling type), a few lower grades I wouldn’t bother with, one of the particularly large variety, and a blonde lady who looks quite cuddly indeed. I wonder if The Boss will cuddle her, and if I might get a ‘piece of the cuddling action,’ as these lower grades say.

Well, if I were an optimist, I would say things can only get better, but as I was programmed by The Boss, I am definitely not optimistic, though hopeful for at least a brief cuddle.

Brad, that is hilarious!
So, no secret diary of Servalan after all? Well, I think that may be a wise decision; otherwise, you might end up at the top of the Federation's most wanted list.

I am wondering whether we will now get 52 snippets from the electronic journal of Roj Bear or 52 snippets from the diaries of various people; both would be an option. In any case, I am looking forward to it!

Just over 47 years ago (gawd, has it been THAT long) my lovely friend Julie popped over to my house with her parent's Xmas double issue Radio Times.
"Look" she said, "there's a new sci fi programme starting in Jan by that Terry Nation chap."
So I read the article, gazed at the piccie, but alas she had to take it home.
Well I had fallen out of love with Star Trek after The Motion Picture and on New Years Eve (Saturday) I had gone to see the new film everyone was raving about. Star Wars.
I came out of the cinema not impressed at all!!!
Then Monday at 5. 15pm I sat down to watch the new programme. Somehow I had got my 11 month old Daughter to sleep.....55 mins later a certain curly haired chap stared at the camera and said, "No, I'm coming back." And I was hooked.
A week later and I was well and truly loving the whole thing as soon as a certain rather nice computer expert hoved into view!
As for Daughter Number one? She has never, ever forgiven Mr Nation for taking my attention away from her. It's been 47 years and she still growls whenever I pick up a Libby at a car boot sale!!
Julie is no longer with us, but I have always thanked her for telling me about B7 and I did manage to get a copy of the article that she showed me in 1977.

Thanks, Huggy. I debated a Servie journal, but there are so many episodes she is not in, I would rely too much on hearsay. And let's face it, Roj Bear is a legend on Horizon, so how could I not give him his own season? Servie will be the subject of many a Roj Bear journal entry. I already know what happens at GP.

Hi OVZ, I got through Xmas okay but it was rather quiet. Just Dearest, Nikki and Grandson. But I did get to see almost all of my lovely Daughter Sarah's fave films. Back to the Future and Raiders etc. Oh and I cried all through The Railway Children and Goodnight Mr Tom!!!
Now Dearest is trying to get used to being retired....so far, so good...sort of.
But, we've just found The High CHaperall (?) is on so we are watching that every day now, plus Wanted: Dead or Alive with a very young Steve McQueen

Righto, I'm pressing the "Disney Happy Ending" option for this year's episodes. Apparently, tonight ends with a custard pie fight, as Blake and Foster make their escape!

Are you sure that that isn't a Mack Sennett ending? A la Keystone Cops and the Great Custard Pie Fight???!!!
Cold! You don't know the meaning of the word cold!
Cold is when you have ice on the INSIDE of your window!!

So have I, but I can't use one of them because most of the cast signed it! (Especially Servalan - in silver pen, of course!). Still - great problem to have, eh?! Good to have you back, OVZ.

That’s cool
I only used once.
In my display case it’s all my Blake’s 7 stuff
Hopefully next week I have some news to share about Blake’s 7 (indirect) ,this Saturday hopefully.
Have me back?

Littlesue, is High Chapparal repeated at a different time do you know?
OvZ glad to 'see' you back.

Watching this on the bluray.
Ah, the giddy days of series A, when a happy ending seemed possible...just...

HC is on i the morning on Great Action ay 11am and then at night at 7pm. I've never seen the first episod until yesterday and the 2nd today. I've got my TV box on to record it every day...just in case I have to go out

I'll have to get some kind of recording device. All the good stuff is on when I'm at work or rewatching something....

I believe they do catchup

Good point, littlesue. A Disney happy ending would involve something horrible happening to a cute animal.

Brad, that Roj Bear is wonderful and hilarious!
I'm looking forward to more!
(And, yes, I still owe you all more Roj Bear screenshot sequels in the Roj Bear thread if you like to see more of those. The screenshots are already waiting for their texts... But work, work, work got in the way... )
