Michael Keating tribute rewatch - C6 City At The End Of The World (Monday, May 25th)
trevor travis
It had to be this episode:

The episode: Colin Six - City At The Edge Of The World (Carry On Space Thief)
The date: Bank Holiday Monday, May 25th, 2026
The time: 7.45pm UK time

In which Vila is the hero, gets (and loses) the girl and saves the day; Colin Baker booms a lot in a role that was made for him and gets to wear far more many studs than Paul Darrow; and, after Servie’s refit of Space Command HQ in the previous episode (Carry On Captain Shad), we find out what happened to the interiors of her office (the Keezarnians nicked them during the Intergalactic War, and painted them black).

Episode in a word: Vila.
Character to cheer: There’s only one person it could be. This is the perfect showcase for everyone’s favourite thief, and was apparently written after Michael Keating told Chris Boucher that his young daughter had told him after watching an episode: “Daddy, you’re stupid”. Vila is the totally at the centre of the episode – and is brave when he needs to be and clever when he needs to be, without ever slipping out of character.
Character to boo: Tarrant’s a bit of a git to Vila at the start of the episode. I guess we should credit him for later realising that he was wrong.
Is Soolin looking lovely this week?: Yes.
Recognisable Face: I think we all know Colin Baker (Bayban) was Doctor Who, while Valentine Dyall (Norl) was the Black Guardian in the same show. But let’s go for a less obvious one. Carol Hawkins (Kerril) was in two Carry On films, Carry On Abroad (1972) and Carry On Behind (1975), two of the better Carry On films from the 1970s.
Best line: Although there’s also the brilliant “Babe” dialogue, pride of place has to go to Vila’s monologue to two speechless Keezarnians delivered perfectly by the sublime Michael Keating: “Is that where we're going? It's miles away. I mean why couldn't I have teleported closer in?” [pause] “Hey? They say too much walking's bad for you, you know. Makes you go deaf. Look what it's done for you. Listen, sooner or later one of you's going to have to speak to me. Well, speak to me one of you! All right, that's it. No speak, no walk. My feet hurt and I didn't want to come anyway.” [sits down] “[Of] course, I'm totally lost, you realise that. Yes, of course you realize that. I don't suppose you'd consider taking me back to where you met me. No, of course you wouldn't. All right, you've talked me into it.” [gets up and walks]

Michael's daughter Lisa appeared in a photo in the B7 Monthly, along with a cousin. I've always been a little uncertain which of the B7 cast had children (and really, why should I know?) but Lisa was the one I definitely, definitely knew about. She's the first one I thought of when hearing the sad news. My heart goes out to all Michael's friends and family but particularly to Lisa.

I wont be able to join you for this one as I have a previous commitment! However I love this episode and Michael is brilliant!!! I love his monologues to the Keezarnians and to the designer of the "door". It just shows Michael's range of acting abilities. 👍👍
I look behind me, what do I see? A pair of golden wings seem to be attached to me.

I shall raise a mug in Vila's (and Michael's) honor. As Adrenaline and Soma doesn't exist in this time line, I shall substitute a Guinness for the soma, and a shot of Jack Daniels for the adrenaline.

Does that actually go together? Still, Vila wouldn't be bothered by those kind of thoughts, so why should we be? But I'll be sticking to my irn bru (made in Scotland from girders but don't tell the advertising authority as that isn't actually true).
I'll raise a glass of the orange stuff to Michael Keating. So long and thanks for all the fizz!

Vila died 45 years ago, but now we mourn the man who made him live.

I think I shall raise a glass of white wine to Michael this evening.
Now to get the DVd set up.
Cold! You don't know the meaning of the word cold!
Cold is when you have ice on the INSIDE of your window!!

I like to think Vila would appreciate my City Limericks.

These poor peasant people need savin'
From a horrible villain named Bayban.
Vila gets the girl, and saves their whole world,
But in the end goes home with Avon.

There was a berserker named Bayban
Whose mum fostered his misbehavin'
But a thief steals his girl, and discovers Home World,
While the black guardian chats with Avon

Hey, we have a 6 pack of Irn Bru in the fridge- cost an arm and a leg to buy, but we love it too. Good idea.

Hello all. Hate to meet up like this, but that is life. Let's all raise one to Michael for creating the endearing and frustrating character of Vila!

I'm so glad irn bru is an international drink. The Scots are brilliant inventors.

But for Lisa, we might not have had this episode! Thanks for organising the re-rewatch, TT.

With a fine glass of red wine to raise to dear Michael I will watch his episode!
My thoughts go out to his family and friends. but now to his wife and to his daughter in particular.
*No, I am not. I am not expendable, I'm not stupid, and I'm not going.*

Only with a truly good person does someone dare behave this way. Vila could have simply taken the weapon and shot Tarrant - people kill mainly out of fear.

Vila is all of this (yes, even brave most of the time, but only when there is no other option ) the whole time, but he's very good in hiding it!

Would you take something and swallow it from Avon's hand? Asking for a friend.

Killing range is only two hundred, so aim for the whites of their eyes....

1. This is why Vila stays drunk or hungover all the time, his eyes are red.
2. 200 what? inches? Come on, Dayna, you can do better than that.

She turns into warrior Cally later on!

I suspect it's because it's a Boucher script. He also gives Cally a decent part in Shadow.
