Yes, they made a huge mistake killing innocent Barney. but not telling about Tom- the least they could have done was banish him. I don't care how short handed they are, he's a killer and not worth it. Maybe they should have dug a third grave?

They have been making life or death situations since this all began. Ironic that now they are faced with a crime they make the wrong decisions.

(1.9) “Law And Order” by MK Jeeves (aka Clive Exton) Directed by Pennant Roberts Simply, a remarkable piece of television. I’m not sure if “favourite” is the right word given the events of this episode, but I do think this is the “best” episode of Survivors – it’s impossible to take your eyes off this and it’s also so thought-provoking. As a viewer, we know all along that poor Barney is innocent of the murder of Wendy, while Tom Price is guilty. We’d previously seen Tom as a bit of a rogue, but with drink inside him, he becomes a murderer. I’d previously commented how the lack of incidental music helps “Survivors”; this episode is the perfect example. There’s no music to signal the moment when Tom starts to assault Wendy; therefore it’s all the more shocking when we see it. We then cut back to the party, but our thoughts are firmly on what Tom has done to Wendy. The morning dawns and the full horror is revealed. Tom hides the murder weapon, while the viewer is left wondering if Wendy was raped as well as murdered. Suddenly that scene from “Starvation” has a chilling new relevance. Then things spiral out of control. Barney is suspected of the murder and Tom starts to panic. Whatever he’s done, Tom doesn’t want Barney punished for it. He gets to Barney first and tries to get him to run away, but his passing on the information that Wendy is dead and Barney is suspected only puts Barney into further trouble. And then we have the Kangaroo Court. It’s dreadful to see the ways things pan out. Greg, in particular, does not come out of it well. He effectively puts together the case for the prosecution based on evidence that he himself admits is “circumstantial”. He also comes up with the idea of capital punishment. And when Jenny wants to slow things up, he insists the Barney is shot here-and-now, rather than wait until the morning. Given a night to sleep on it, I feel Tom Price would have come clean, he appears to be on the verge of cracking at any moment. There’s some fantastic acting in this. John Hallett is terrific as the simple Barney, who really does not understand what is going on. The scene of him playing with John & Lizzie demonstrate that he is a true innocent. Talfryn Thomas is superb as Tom; a murderer but one who is now going through hell in seeing what his actions (plus his cowardice not to own up) are causing. There’s also some fantastic stuff from Carolyn Seymour, portraying Abby, as she has to make the casting vote on whether Barney should put to death or banished. The only adult character to come out of the whole thing with any credit is Emma Cohen. She is the voice of reason, but sadly doesn’t get through to enough people. Meanwhile, we do see Arthur becoming part of the group as the episode progresses. At least his arguments have some sort of logic to them, unlike those of Greg. Barney is killed off screen by a single shot; this only makes the whole thing even more shocking somehow. If only Tom Price had picked the short straw; he’d have never gone through with it. And then Tom Price finally collapses and confesses. And then maybe the biggest shock of all – as Greg forces Abby to cover up the murder. Abby maybe doesn’t come out of it too well either, as she should call Greg on his blackmail, whatever the consequences on the community of the Grange. As for Greg, well... up until this point, it looked lead our three leads had generally good motives – but is Greg now any better than Wormley? His bullying and refusal to allow anyone time to think things through have had tragic consequences. And the final sign this is a mature piece of television. A very guilty Tom Price sobbing over the events he has caused. We’re actually asked to feel sorry for this man, this murderer. It’s not quite possible to do that, but you do realise that Tom is truly remorseful for what he’s done. Maybe he’s not as bad as Greg Preston, actually. Two people die here. Tom Price murdered one. Greg Preston is largely responsible for the death of the other. And just when you think it’s over, halfway through the end credits, we switch to the twin graves of Wendy and Barney. Oh my. As I said at the start of this review, a truly remarkable piece of television. TT Og heads out of ten: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (Og is crying) Vote Og.
