At Christmas, to ease some of the sadness after doing the Southern Hemisphere (actually, Eastern Hemisphere) rewatch of 'Blake' on Christmas Eve, I dug up 'Scrooge' 1970 from YouTube just so that I could watch lovely David Collings as Bob Cratchit. This musical adaptation featured some greats, including Albert Finney as Scrooge, Alec Guiness as Marley's Ghost, Dame Edith Evans, Kenneth More, Gordon Jackson and Roy Kinnear. Don't know when I last watched this (decades ago), but David Collings is still just perfect as Mr. Cratchit. He's the only thing I remembered about the film – Love of Bob Cratchit at age 12. Also, thanks to endless repeats on one of our commercial channels, caught Stephen Tate (Mandrian - Mission to Destiny) as Patrick Bennett in Kavanagh QC S2 Ep2 "Men of Substance". I'd never looked at his career before. At age 12 (thanks to the "Tina" comic) I probably knew that he'd played Judas to Paul Nicholas' Jesus in the original London stage production of Jesus Christ Superstar but had since forgotten. Wowie! Finally managed to watch the legendary The Legend of Robin Hood on the weekend. Apart from Avon and Ford Prefect in the steam bath (steady, Avon ladies, steady!) I also spotted Ushton (Hubert Rimmer) as Lady Marion's father, Ensor Jr. as Friar Tuck, Jarriere as a monk (the nose gave it away), Joban Ardus or Ardus Joban as an evil Abbot and Molok as a robber. Oh, and there was also Tony Steedman who seems to have been in everything except B7. While part 6 seemed a little rushed and the fight scenes are quite ridiculous, all in all the series is a refreshing take on the all too familiar story, more focused on political scheming than on the usual preposterous adventures of merry men in tights. Wonderfully gritty, without tights, with Friar Tuck as a serious character and the love of Robin and Marion never consummated. Also interesting to compare this with Arthur of the Britons: In Arthur, the true Brits are the Celts fighting against the Saxon invaders. In Robin, the true Brits are the Saxons fighting against the Norman overlords. Tempora mutantur... |

I've got the DVD set but only have seen the one episode as of yet. Now I need to watch The Legend of Robin Hood to see all the familiar actors. I've seen a still photo of the steam bath scene but it left me shrugging and saying, 'so?' (ducks as Avon ladies throw cans of prawn flavored Pringles at me!) Resist the Host

Although you'd only spot David from the credits, as he is inside a full body latex rubber monster suit. And while I didn't recognize Mark Zuber, I did recognize his mustache.

Bit-part cop role for David Jackson in the classic 'The Eyes Have It' episode from Brian Clemens' excellent 1970s series 'Thriller'. (Working my way through a bumper 16-disc DVD boxset.) Also featured younger versions of pre-'Sweeney' Dennis Waterman, his later 'New Tricks' compadre Alun Armstrong and Sinead Cusack, who I nearly ran over in Watlington once when she stepped out in front of my car. (She was very apologetic and I don't think she was acting.)
Meanwhile back in the year one...

Not a who but a what: Ensor's Warren Platner arm chairs from Knoll, 1966, turn up with their matching dining table in Massimo Ruggero's dining area in 'Devils' (Sky) 2020. What goes around comes around.    Well, maybe they're not EXACTLY Ensor's chairs, they've been recovered in grey/black, but only the best for our 3rd century, 2nd calendar heroes (new chairs are U$4468 a pop and A$51,951 for a table and 4 chairs).

Just watched the Saint on Talking Pictures tonight called The Inescapable Word (or something like that), in which a murder victim wrote the name of his killer in his own blood...hang on, says I, that sounds just like Mission to Destiny...yep, this episode was written by Our Tel, based on a story by Mr Charteris......I couldn't help but giggle. We know Mr Nation likes to reuse ideas and plot lines........but nicking the idea from Mr Charteris in the first place. And yes, some of the dialogue sounded just like that from Mission to Destiny. Not exactly spotted but heard. Daughter no. 1, who has never forgiven Mr Nation since Jan 2nd 1978, or Mr D for 9th Jan 1978, was watching a tribute to Paul O'Grady when as his alter ego, Lily Savage, walked down some stairs in an episode of Blankety Blank, the B7 theme was played, very briefly, but she insisted that I find the episode on catch up and watch it, just about 13 mins in, and yep, sure enough, it's Uncle Dudley's music all right!!! Our Tel must have been very busy back in the 60s...yep, he penned last nights Saint episode (Sign of the Claw) with the lovely Suzan Farmer, plus the entire ITC go to actors when the Bamboo Curtain (or that area anyway) is part of the script. I think just about every actor in the Saint last night, turned up in the 1st episode of the Champions!! Our Suzan of course joined Sir Roger in one of the Persuaders episodes (where she told Mr Curtis that his English accent was the worst she's ever heard...before stifling a laugh.) And Suzan Farmer is on my viewing screen right now: Survival, an episode of UFO. Classic Gerry Anderson series which, like B7, made good use of our stock of great character actors and well-known faces. Her flat is a bit more groovy than her place in Deliverance. Probably got real friends too.

Forgot to mention that Sunday's Episode of The Saint was written by Uncle Tel. What gave it away? A character called Krantor and Simon up against the clock to open a safe before getting gassed. I thought to myself, 'That's almost like Countdown' So I checked IMBD...yep Mr Nation. This idea with opening a safe in a few minutes also appeared in the CHampions episode The Fanatics...also written by Uncle Tel. I'm now watching the episodes to see if I can spot an Uncle Tel script before the end credits roll!!!!! Cold! You don't know the meaning of the word cold! Another 'heard', not 'spotted'. Was just unpacking some bits and pieces I plan to use as props for Tyce-Con II, when we eventually get around to it (Tyce needs to be in this country for it to happen), and lo and behold, local ABC Classic FM Radio decided to entertain us with 'Blow the Wind Southerly', usually only heard squawking from Sarkoff's gramophone in "Bounty". "Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade" is on TV tonight as part of the ramp-up for the release of "Dial of Destiny". Lots of B7 actors in this including Julian Glover, Isla Blair, Michael Sheard, Ronald Lacey and Graham Cole; also Steven Pacey's brother Peter Pacey. Lots of other famous faces including Alexei Sayle, Kevork Malikyan (Max the Greek gentleman in "Mind Your Language") and the guy who played Guard at Checkpoint in an episode of The Professionals. |

Sunday's The Saint, penned yet again by our Uncle Tel. This time based on a story by Mr Charteris (?!). It was interesting to watch Nosher Powell (the stuntman in many a show back then) having a go at acting and doing quite a realistic boxing match with Sir Roger. And then there was a film at 9 (out of the darkness or something like that?) Screenplay by Uncle Tel. He was a very busy chap! Cold! You don't know the meaning of the word cold! Channel 7(2)here in Australia seems to be showing reruns of Pie in the Sky whenever it feels like it. Waiting for Mr. D to show up in S4 Ep.4, "New Leaf", but in the meantime, Sasha Mitchell (Arlen – as if we could forget) was spotted in S1 Ep.7 "Passionfriuit Fool".
