Date/Time: Thursday 15th June 7.45pm -ish Story: If you don't know it already, I'm not going to tell you. For me, the slow reveal is part of what makes this film so brilliant. Needless to say, the whole of humanity is in deadly peril. This is the Quatermass film most often claimed as the best and is definitely a fan favourite. It's got everything: great actors; a brilliant story; it oozes with atmosphere and it's in colour! Woo hoo! Brian 'spelt correctly' Donlevy is replaced by Scottish actor Andrew Keir as Quatermass. I have to say the difference is palpable. (AA, I dare you NOT to like this version of the Professor). Keir has gravitas, intelligence and emotional range. His Quatermass is still fiercely promoting his work but he has a humanity that shows him as a fully rounded character. Keir has the most fantastic support cast around him: Julian 'B7' Glover plays Colonel Breen the Professor's nemesis in the Rocket project; James Donald plays Dr Roney, the Quatermass of his field of interest; genre favourite Barbara Shelley has an excellent role as Roney's assistant. The other support cast includes Duncan 'originally in the role of Blake's father's brother' Lamont; Bryan Marshall; Sheila 'dalek invasion' Steafel; Peter Copley & Noel Howlett...I could go on. Oh, I have gone on.... Filmed at Elstree's MGM-British studios -rather than Hammer's own studios - and in London. The director is Roy Ward Baker who worked on many Hammer productions in the 70s. Nigel Kneale wrote all of the screenplay and total writing control pays off in this film. Oh and you might spot someone you know right at the start of the film..... Link to film on internet archive site: https://archive.org/details/quatermas...nd-the-pit Silflay hraka, u embleer rah!

Well, M1's always banging on about how films should have more palaeoanthropology content and she'll get her wish with this one. A decent, if slightly slow-moving romp and nice to see Andrew K and Barbara S reunited after their stint on Dracula: Prince of Darkness. If I were being critical, I'd say the plot's a bit kitchen sink-y and AK's Quatermass is a bit too 'straight'. But connoisseurs of the unintentionally hilarious will absolutely love the bit where...well, no spoilers but you'll know when you see it! Bizarre and highly comical! |

"Where was Moses when the lights went out? In the Dark!!!" "Jumping! Leaping!!" That policeman in That row of houses..still creepy even now. I've never looked at one of those tower cranes in the same way since!!! When I saw this for the first time on a late late channel, the announcer said "Well, I suppose you're all off to bed now? Me? I've got to go home, in the dark, after watching that!!!" And as for Mr Glover...my lovely daughter. Sarah, met him at a Comicon or such and told him "You melted so beautifully in that film." "Well, thank you so much", replied he!!!! Cold! You don't know the meaning of the word cold! Cold is when you have ice on the INSIDE of your window!! This movie (and the TV miniseries that inspired it) was such an obvious influence on the UNIT years of Doctor Who. I was too young when watching Dr Who to realise this...plus I didn't see Quatermass until I was several years older. I rewatched Inferno a few years back and....Dr Quatermass indeed. I've never looked at one of those tower cranes in the same way since!!! They have been doing a lot of redevelopment in my town lately. And everytime, I look up at those cranes and think about Dr Roney....what a hero. Seeing them in shadow at night brings out the creeps big time.... Silflay hraka, u embleer rah!

A serious note: I have found Quatermass 4 the mini series (on the internet archive site). That is 4 1 hour episodes ( well 50ish minutes, less the adverts). The questions are: do we watch it? If so, 1 episode per week or 2? 2 episodes would mean an approx finishing time of 9.30 with no breaks. There is a film version which was boiled down to approx. 1hour 40 mins but I haven't found it to stream as yet. What do you say? Silflay hraka, u embleer rah!

This movie (and the TV miniseries that inspired it) was such an obvious influence on the UNIT years of Doctor Who. The first hour feels like a slightly sluggish DW episode, with a DW who's a little lacking on the ka-rizz front. DW has plenty of Q&tP DNA. |

I'd just like to say that I do NOT 'bang on' about anything, other than the incomparable Jacqueline Pearce, for which I think you'll agree I can be forgiven. All those oblique references to cranes (phallic symbols, of course - that's the anthropology stuff dealt with) etcetera have failed to enlighten me as to the storyline, so well done for not posting any obvious spoilers, everyone. More Quatermass might be fun - OK by me. What did we say we were going to rewatch after Q? "You're not sulking, I hope?"

Quatermass' 4 was also released as a film (slimmed down) of the series. I plan to live forever,or die trying.

If you like Quatermass film How about, X the Unknown,British film, it was was written as a follow on from Quatermass , because Nigel Kneel didn't want anything more to do with people involved etc,it was partly /loosely based on an idea etc. So not Quatermass ,but in a very similar style as Quatermass. Very good film. And yes I have it

Quote The sound of music? Probably one of CB's absolute favourites. Great movie. And the only war film where I invariably end up supporting the Nazis. (Just back from a lightning raid on Avebury, btw, M1 - having spent too much in The Henge Shop, as usual. Perfect at this time of year, in this weather. But the staff in The Red Lion really are a joyless bunch of nerks. They'd have been in their absolute element working in a 1970s record shop. "Oh noooo...not a bleedin' customer..." ) |
