 Quatermass 4 (1979) 4 part tv serial. Part 1: Ringstone Round

Date/Time: Thursday 22nd June 7.45pm Story: Bernard Quatermass is an old man, his experimental rocket group days long behind him. A lifetime of setbacks in his work has left Quatermass bitter and alone. The only thing he cares about is his granddaughter, Hettie who has run away from home. Quatermass leaves his remote Scottish home to go to a London tv studio as the 'guest expert' commenting on the "hands in space" project but really all he wants to do is to find Hettie. After seeing, at 1st hand, the urban collapse that has all but destroyed society, he tells the tv viewers exactly what he thinks of the space project. Chaos, of course, ensues.... John Mills stars as the Professor with great support from Simon McCorkindale, Barbara 'Queen of Narnia' Kellerman & Margaret 'I, Claudius' Tyzack. You may also spot the Chinese Detective David Yip, oscar winner Brenda Fricker and Bruce 'Gola the Goth' Purchase.... Kneale took his script to Thames TV after the BBC prevaricated over filming it. After all, he had only written some of the most popular tv series ever shown on tv, why should they trust him to write another? Q4 was made by Euston films, responsible for the brilliant series, The Sweeney. Producers were Ted Childs and also Verity Lambert. Will skip this too as it's far too beautiful a midsummer's evening to be gawping at the telly. Even the radio telescope/stone circle combo can't compete with a glorious near-solstice evening sky. |

Having megaliths and radio telescopes together in the intro is an interesting combination. Both aimed at the same thing, really.

This is a good story,but sir John mills looked uncomfortable in this part,even reviewers said so. Possibly. He said himself he was miscast but I like him. He warms up to it as his character warms up to getting back to his old self. Silflay hraka, u embleer rah!
