This is different to the book, but given it's told in the first person of someone us telling the story in the first person, it was going to be tricky to replicate. It's doing a decent job of it!

For me, it's one of those instances where the film is its own entity and works well.

The 'action' is slow compared to films today. He'd have been eaten by some kind of alien monster by now. Or had a crazy car chase or something, (who cares what the book was like - we need to cater for a modern audience...)

I mean on screen like today, don’t mind violence if crucial to the story but not just for the sake of it.

I'd say worried rather than cynical. He'd lived through so much war he knew people would keep killing each other - so he tried to warn about it by writing. (The only cynical bit was that writing was also a way of making a living. But he was already an 'influencer', so he tried to use his skill to benefit everyone).

Enoi...ennui...boredom. Lose the basic instincts to survive, to fight... and we lose everything, apparently. 'Peace' isn't all it's cracked up to be.
