Well, somehow he has a fire going. Despite the atmosphere being mostly carbon dioxide.

Well that is one of the things where you have to decide if you can believe what the film tells you

OK, sorry. I'll just tell myself it's not really Mars as such, but some alien place where anything might happen. (Like Shakespeare always set his plays in exotic places like 'Verona', where none of his audience would ever have been).

Don't shoot the monkey, you fool!

Any idea where it was (really filmed?) Looks like the back end of some off-road trail in Utah so far.

No, don't, because either a) you might need to eat it later or b ) (more likely) it finds a way off the planet for you.

Well, as we still have most of the film to go, I am assuming that he finds a supply of oxygen somewhere.

He's 'acclimating', as the Americans might say, rather well, considering.
(nice little condenser he's created, btw).

Just attempting to add a bit of verisimilitude to the proceedings.
For those to whom 'techno' language is too hard to follow,
'acclimating' (American English) = ACCLIMATISING, for goodness sake.
condenser - device that uses evaporation to collect water vapour from the (admittely thin) atmosphere.

That Martian bladder wrack the monkey was scoffing seems more palateable than the Terran kind.

And of course she is female - so we do have a female in the film, if not a female human.

I have to say that if I were shipwrecked on a desert planet, inventing the bagpipe would not be high on my agenda.

Strangely, it does seem to be an instrument that has been invented by several cultures.
Perhaps an early attempt to imitate the local wildlife - bagpipes make noises from breathing out, like most creatures??

Typical English-speaker - I will teach you to speak English, I will not learn your language. A marooned Dutch astronaut would not only have learned Friday's language by now, he'd be correcting his grammar!
