The Champions S01 E01
Sharron MacReady, Craig Stirling and Richard Barrett work as agents for international law enforcement bureau Nemesis, based in Geneva, Whilst returning from a mission in China with bacteriological material stolen from the Chinese, their plane is shot down over the Himalayas. They survive and are nurtured by a Tibetan tribe, presided over by an elderly lama, who give them super-human strength, telepathic powers and augmented hearing. This allows them to best their pursuers and return to Geneva, though they keep their promise to the old lama not to divulge to their boss Tremayne - or anybody - how they have obtained their new strengths.

I still prefer the less well known remake, with the elderly llama.

I actually remember watching this series when it was first on. (Nothing said European eleganza and je ne sais quoi quite like that big jet of water in Geneva, even though it appears to be spurting out of the top of Stuart Damon's head.)

But I missed the very first episode and the playground was buzzing with it the next day. (I'd have been 6 when it first appeared on our screens, at the arse-end of 1968.) To this day, I've never ever seen it. I'm about to put that right. If it's brim-full of comic potential, I might join you on Thursday for a second dollop.

Besides, I've got unfinished wasp-related business with OSP.Smile

Come and have a go if you think you're daft enough! Angry

Someday there will be the right moment to watch The Wasp Woman. You could always start your own thread! Someone will want to watch it... Grin

The 1st episode of The Champions is one of the best openers to a series I have ever seen. I love it. And the feem toon!

Tbh I've temporarily shelved my idea of running a thread called 'Cygnus Bazza's Crap Film Club'. There's only so much opprobrium one can take. (Much like Imodium.)

I watched it for the first time ever on Saturday - what a cracker! Well, I wouldn't be eligible for the rewatch unless I'd watched it in the first place, would I???

It was very Blakes 7-y. I found myself shouting names of multiple B7 episodes at my laptop as different scenes popped up: 'Orbit', 'Blake', anything with Cally's telepathy, anything where they're trying to break into a max-security establishment etc. Had forgotten how good Tremayne was. The only man who could sit in a chair as well as this (original) Mr T was CJ from 'Reginald Perrin'.

Cygnus Bazza
Hope to make this, but looking a bit 50/50 at the moment. Maybe 60/40. But possibly 40/60. Not 35/65, though, so I'm still hopeful. Certainly don't want to miss the opportunity to see whether Mr T actually changes his suit/tie at any point in the proceedings.

OOOOOHhhhhhh, can I join in? Pretty Please. You know that I absolutely love The Champions. Got the bubble gum cards somewhere, and the paper back book, plus I had the Joe 90 comics that it appeared in and I've also purchased the music CD recently.

Get on board, littlesue! We're off to the Himalayas! (It's a very gender-specific mountain range.)

DRINKING GAME FOR THIS EPISODE: EVERY TIME SOMEONE USES A WET WIPE.

Sorry I won't be able to make it tonight - a very tedious meeting, for which I am taking the minutes. I will make sure to watch this episode, though, as it looks like it's the one that sets the whole thing up.

Just getting my DVDs ready.
Are we going to have the correct running order as per the original broadcast back in 68/69? For us in the Southern TV region it was on Saturday evening. I've just looked at my DVD set and it doesn't seem to have them in the right order. It should be The beginning, The invisible Man, Reply box No. 666 and then The Experiment (my Grandson's fave for some reason). My disc has the the first 2 and then Operation Deep Freeze followed by A Case of Lemmings.

Just looked at my Champions scrap Book. Apart from The Beginning at the start and Autokill at the end, they seem to have episodes all over the place!!!!

I have no idea now. Just looked at my Encyclopedia of TV Science Fiction and they have the episodes listed but no date or time when shown...how I wish I had written them down all those years ago....but I was only 15 at the time.....

Well, wet wipes were invented in 1957, so they'd had time to migrate to the Himalayas.

Thanks for that Sue. It's going to be nice having someone sensible in the Non-B7 rewatches. Hope you enjoy it!

Bloody hell. They took 50 years to migrate north to staffordshire. More's the pity.

Bother. But you're doing the Right Thing by your fellow-citizens, a characteristic the Federation promotes and respects, so you should feel doubly virtuous.

I've an LP of TV Themes and the Champions theme on it doesn't sound anything like one the TV...to make matters worse the chappie who wrote the sleeve notes calls it the theme from Campion House!!!! It is the Champions theme but nowhere near as nice.
