Dinner happens in the middle of the day, and has done since Roman times. They skipped breakfast, and ate at dinnertime, doh. 'Dinner' itself comes from the French word disner that means 'to dine'. The south (technically anywhere south of Manchester) don't know what they're talking about. So tea is a carefully cooked meal, but dinner is a sandwich bolted down while you continue to work? |

Dinner always used to be a cooked meal. People went home from work and school to eat it. School meals still retain a vestige of a proper 'dinner'. Current working practices in the UK are what dictate the stupidity of bolting down a sandwich. "You're not sulking, I hope?"
