I estimate they did one of two things for the rocks. They were either genuine obsidian, volcanic glass, or they used actual cullet, chunks of glass for the props.

All those rocks look like pieces of Obsidian.... fragments left over from yesterday's B7 rewatch when Hower blew up the planet.
