Presented here is the BBC's second television adaptation of the Robin Hood tradition, 1975's "The Legend of Robin Hood", starring Martin Potter as the prince of thieves. This series is a more grounded retelling of the Robin Hood legend, with political scheming, violent conflicts, and a more communal band of rebellious outlaws. Robin is a composite of the traditional yeoman and revisionist nobleman, being raised as a commoner but born the Earl of Huntingdon. Taking inspiration from the later 18th and 19th century literary material - such as the old crone prophesying Robin's demise - the series choses to present these typical aspects in a realistic (if unmistakably 1970s!) manner. Sporting six episodes, "The Legend of Robin Hood" is a little-known gem in Robin's televisual timeline, featuring one of the more poignant ends in modern Robin Hood media... Starring Diane Keen as Marian, "Blake's 7" alum Paul Darrow as the Sheriff of Nottingham, "Robin of Sherwood" regular John Albineri as Sir Kenneth, and David Dixon as Prince John.

"Unmistakably 70s"? Will steel myself for Robin's Afro, Marian's Farrah feather cut and Triar F*ck's ill-judged combover.

I still have no idea what Smile means. If anything. Speedy because otherwise I'd probably forget.

Don't blame me. I merely stole the description from the 'official' site. Combovers are always bad news. And the word itself just looks WRONG.

I have this on DVD and Mr D is in a hot tub!!! I'm afraid that particular scene is almost worn out where I keep pressing the pause button!!!
Cold! You don't know the meaning of the word cold!
Cold is when you have ice on the INSIDE of your window!!

Every Robin Hood adaptation needs an iconic hairdo. Could Triar F*ck’s tonsure be ‘it’, this time round? The Gold Standard being Costner’s Def Leppard mullet. Reminds me…for one of my late-90s so-called ‘projects’, penned a ‘Mull of Kintyre’-style ditty called ‘Mullet It Be’:

Was it just madness or some kind of virus
Accosting Kev Costner and Billy Ray Cyrus?
How come their judgement came under attack?
Hair short at the sides yet so long at the back
Though these days, all round, this naff hairstyle scores noughts
It’s still to be found in Canadian passports
Mul-let it be! Mul-let it be! Mul-let it be! Once more in hairdressery...

Can’t remember the rest, mercifully.

Do you think one episode per week might be more advisable than two? Looks like they're an hour long. Two hours could be an awful lot of codpieces.

I bow to your greater wisdom and will amend the thread accordingly. It wouldn't look good if some of us fell asleep because we were up past our bedtimes.

Sadly I won't be able to join you. Happily, it's because the book on 13th century heresy in Languedoc I and others have been working on for ten years now is finally finished, and we are having a celebratory dinner.

That's good news! (About the book, not about you not being available.) A celebratory dinner would be a lot easier with an air fryer.

Ah, the thrill of completing a task! Well done, AA. And only a century after Robin's most well known adventures.

Once asked someone who their favourite Sheriff of Nottingham was. “Rick Wakeman”, they said. “Oh,” I replied. “Don’t think I know that version”. Turned out they meant Alan Rickman.

Could have been a triple album with poster. Not like our Rick to let a cash-register idea like that go begging.
