Starting at 7.45pm (BST) Ivan Vasilyevich Changes His Profession (movie, 1970, in Russian with English subtitles) "A scientist builds a time machine and accidentally sends his apartment complex manager and a petty burglar to 16th century Moscow, while Tsar Ivan the Terrible travels to 1973." https://www.youtube.com/live/m3xVdxDWFWU https://archive.org/details/ivan-vasi...ssiyu-1973 "You're not sulking, I hope?"

Unfortunately, I've got a few availability 'challenges' and it's likely I'll miss this and the following rewatch. The one after that (26th Sept) I'll definitely miss. Do have fun, though! And don't behave yourselves. Definitely back for WET GECKO on 1st October - see that thread for an EXCITING CHANGE OF PLAN regarding what we'll be watching... |

While I think of it, on the rewatch/watch theme, for those of you who expressed an interest, I haven't forgotten about the 'Month of Sundays' idea. Perhaps try road-testing that on a Wednesday in November? Could start the ball rolling by commissioning M1 to come up with something baffling for us, as she's been a bit deficient on the good ideas front lately ! Tai had a nifty idea IIRC, while Paula/Brad were reflecting on the myriad possibilities, and I'm confident more potential punters will soon be champing at the bit...

Before we start I would like to tell you something about this film. It is based on the play by Russian writer Mikhail Bulgakov. The movie was so successful that its success overshadowed the play. One other thing. I would like to tell you about patronymics. In Russian language it is the name of the father which has a suffix. The name Vasiliy turns into Vasilievich. Ivan the Terrible is Vasilievich, because his father was Vasiliy. The other hero of the movie has the same name Ivan and the same patronymic. Patronymics are used in formal language. If someone wants to address a stranger or a superior, he or she uses the first name and the patronymic. |

Sitting here trying to work out why he's going on about my lack of ideas, when I've been nobly holding back and instead generously posting the threads you choose... etc etc etc. Forget CB: let's see what Ivan Not the Terrible gets up to! English patronymics often had 'son' as a suffix, so Ben would be the father, and Benson his son. But often the relationship happened many generations ago, and now the family don't remember who the original Ben was, they're just the Benson family. "You're not sulking, I hope?"

The name of the scientist Shurik is short for Alexander. Sasha is also the short name for Alexander, but it can be male and female. If Sasha is a woman, then her full name is Alexandra. |

I don't like that nickname of the tsar Grozny is translated like terrible. It is more like severe. |
