Vanyusha is also short for Ivan Excuse me? Eight letters instead of four? Then Russians must have a different definition of 'short' ! In English, Johnny is short for John. 'Short' isn't the right description. It's more of a familiar name, that one would use for a close friend or a child. I think the same must be true for Ivan. I wish we could see more of Ivan the Severe discovering 70's Russia. "You're not sulking, I hope?"

Even in english. It's a pet name for John then, used when people know each other well, as Taiellin says - like Vanyusha. |

Incidentally, the bloke playing the (real) Tsar has a fabulous voice. "You're not sulking, I hope?"

This picture in Shurik's flat was made by the famous artist Ilya Repin. It is called Ivan the Terrible and his son Ivan. According to the famous version Ivan the Terrible killed his son in rage. He hit him with a stick. Now though this version is questioned. There is evidence that he was sick at that time. Nobody knows for sure.

They gave this region away in the play. Not so much Ivan the Severe as Ivan the Pushover. |

Marfa was the third wife of Ivan the Terrible. Unfortunately, she was sick and died shortly after the wedding. |
