WET GECKO: METROPOLIS (PART ZWEI) 19.45 Mittwoch 8. Oktober
Cygnus Bazza
Picking up the action at 1:20:16. Not sure what the equivalent would be on the 10-hour clock in the Maschinenhalle. (That's German for 'Machine Hall' btw. You're welcome.) Presumably the workers never got to have elevenses.

Brutal.

Time to conclude our very own Oktoberfest as we find out whether Frodo can thwart Rotwang's despicable despicability. ('Rotwang', of course, being German for 'Red Wang'. You're welcome.)

Grot im Himmel and Ave Maria.

Looking forward to it, and trying to imagine what it was like watching this movie in 1927. It must have been quite the mind bender.

I watched it amazed at the style and ideas. If people are astounded by it now, then, yes, what must it have been like in the 1920s? It's like some quantum leap took place in filmmaking. What lead up to Metropolis? I'll have to take a look.

Yes and no, perhaps. Cinema-goers in Weimar Germany especially, but also elsewhere, had been having their minds bent out of shape, in multiple directions, for a good few years by this point.

I'm not sure how many Germans ever got to see 'Aelita, Queen of Mars', a Soviet sci-fi ground-breaker from a few years earlier, but I'd be absolutely amazed if Fritz Lang hadn't. This is quite an interesting intro piece on the topic of precursors, from the British Film Institute: https://www.bfi.org.uk/features/metro...ent-sci-fi

Lang's own pre-'Metropolis' corpus ('Dr Mabuse the Gambler' etc) is worth investigating, as is his post-'Metropolis' stuff ('The Woman in the Moon' etc), of course.

Such an influential film, but I wonder if it in turn was influenced by Jules Verne's The Time Machine, with Eloi above and Morlocks below....

H G Wells?

Every time I see Rotwang, my brain plays a song from Sweeney Todd.

Presumably "The Worst Pies in Potsdam".

The actor was your typical rent-a-creepster in inter-war German movies. Apart from Rotwang, best known as Dr Mabuse but loads and loads of roles. Hairstyles to suit.

Not sure what to listen to, to get me properly rewatch-ready:

a. The Passions: I'm in Love with a German Film Star
b. The Mobiles: Drowning in Berlin
