I wonder if the Triffids' rattling is them communicating "Kill The Humans, End Their Culture."

I'm a bit ambivalent about John Wyndham. The stories are great, but he has some very fifties attitudes, especially about women. You have to read them as a period piece, unless you want to 'do a Dahl' on the text. I do, but I still find him (slightly) creepily fifties, rather than sweetly fifties like Asimov. (I don't think Azimov would have expected anyone to describe him as 'sweet'!) Just focus on the storyline, then. That's what really matters. I think the 'woman as breeding stock' thing will be very much toned down here. |

It was a very 1981 sci-fi thing to have the hero in his PJs. First Arthur Dent, now him...

Anne said I think the 'woman as breeding stock' thing will be very much toned down here. One only has to look at the Handmaid's Tale to see that it's a continuing theme. "You're not sulking, I hope?"

This has a lot of paralells with the first episode of Survivors, as the whole of humanity comes crashing down due to a single disaster!
