I forget now that SO many people in the 70's & 80's smoked. And beyond that! The pubs in the 1990s were horrible - came home stinking of smoke and I didn't smoke! i remember going into a club in Amsterdam in the 90's & got high as a kite utterly free *LOL* |

Jimmy Garland has an interesting philosophy! yes... and quite understandable as a 4th son. I went to private school for a bit & the girl of posh familys were always despodant of the male siblings... the 1st son was always entitled, the 2nd was envious & the 'also rans' sulked about looking for purpose. |

In times like this you cannot split into men out there & women in the house - it would have to be everyone fit out there & everyone old or young or infirm in the house. It really would not work otherwise. |

The shooting schedule must have been pretty brisk on Survivors. 6 eps in and it is still brass monkeys out there.

Garland's War 10 A really gripping tale ... as the low post count shows! All too absorbed in the story to comment. |

Review from a previous rewatch: (1.6) “Garland’s War” by Terry Nation Directed by Terence Williams “I couldn’t have invented a better time to be alive”. Love this episode! It’s arguably the last episode which follows Our Tel’s original vision of the programme, before we instead follow the ideas of Terence Dudley. This is a classic action adventure episode. Jimmy Garland is the first person we see who seems to be almost welcome the Death. Abby starts the episode in a down mood again, as yet another trail for Peter proves to be false. But she soon cheers up, as Garland woos her. Just as with Greg and Jenny, they seem to enjoy relations while fully clothed (well it was the BBC in the 1970s!!). There’s a real sense of peril in this episode. Is Garland’s War (as he himself describes it) a little too dangerous? Perhaps it is surprising then, given the amount of gun shots, that for once, an episode ends that isn’t littered in dead bodies. Richard Heffer’s Jimmy Garland is matched in charm by Peter Jeffery’s Knox. After Abby is captured, he goes a long way to convincing her that Garland is the loose cannon and, above everything else, he just wants is a quiet life. He’s convincing enough and he fools Abby into persuading Garland into talks. At this point, Knox reveals his true colours. Garland believes in honour, but Knox doesn’t, he says those rules don’t apply in the new post-Death world. Greg and Jenny turn up in time to help save the day, and Garland stays to continue his war... but leaves Abby with a new-found twinkle in her eye. There’s plenty of action in this episode, but it’s matched by plenty of good dialogue. Garland has some interesting views, such as how “you can’t mourn for a world”. A nice continuity reference to the previous episode as well, as Abby is keen to warn the man at the start of the episode that they are carriers. She doesn’t want to kill anyone else. If you really wanted to be picky, you could say the studio shot scenes are a bit obvious. On the other hand, I prefer to look to concentrate how good the locations are in the episode. Brockhampton Court is certainly impressive, as are the forest scenes. A fantastic romp, that succeeds is also being an enthralling piece of television. Terry Nation at his best. TT Og heads out of ten: Vote Og.

Right and wrong don't seem to be too far apart at times. I think the ordinary people would have to make some tough choices to feel safe.
