Blake's 7 - in 3D
MadHatch
Ok, it's time for a discussion about scale. This article uses screen evidence and a little bit of maths.

I'd like you all to meet Bob. Bob is a 3D man who doesn't do anything much but help me appreciate the scale of whatever I build in 3D. Bob looks nothing like me, but happens to be the same height as me 167cm -

As I say, Bob doesn't;t do much except for standing next to things, so here he is standing next to the hatch on the London -

The hatch is 2m high, which seems to fit what was seen on screen when the actors were next to it. Based on that, the scale of the hatch to the rest of the ship etc based on the blueprints for the London, we can work out that the ship is 54.7m long. This is the same length as Horizon's Technical Manual. (although I'm using metric, not imperial).

Why is this important?

Because we are going to work out the scale of something larger...

The Liberator, London and Bob all together -

Here, the Liberator has been scaled to be 780 meters long, this is based on the following -

This is not far off the length of the London as compared with the Liberator in this image -

BUT, if we are going to fit rooms like the Flight Deck, Teleport, crew quarters et all into the frame of the Liberator, we are going to have to allow for the hull to be large enough to accommodate them. Therefore a length of 750-780 meters works. A larger size of 1000m would work but require the London to be larger.

It should also be noted, this is by no means the only reference point we have for scale. In "Time Squad" the Liberator took a pod on board using a hexagonal scoop-like thing. In a few episodes one of the shooting models was seen to have this built into the ship, and so therefore I have included it in my model -

Again, as stated this is seen on screen in a few episodes in the location. But only ever used once. Nicely, we can work out the size of the "pod" rescued, because the cast walked around outside and inside it. But using 3DS MAX to measure things, I can fit a ship no more than 5.5m wide in that scoop. I shall have a hunt and see what I can find out about that pod/ship.

So, based on screen evidence and some common sense, I state that the Liberator is 780 meters long, from the forward boom to the end of the after sphere.

This debunks the following pages/videos -

Looking at the deck layout from the Technical Manual, I make the width of the hull - at its widest part - is 190 feet, or 57.91m. Looking at the model, as I've built it, that's not far off the width of the centre hull at about the area it's assumed the crew use, if I were to up the size of the ship by, say, 5%.

I think the answer to the age-old question of just how big the Liberator is/was is going to be answered!

The work can be credited to those who put the technical manual together :-)

So after playing around - I only needed to up the scale by 3% and alter the length of the main boom to give me a nice round figure: 805m -

All I can say is that sometimes my autistic brain gets stuck on a detail and has to work it out.

805 meters, or 2641 feet Grin

Last of the Liberator before moving back to Scorpio - have seen *one* picture of the new shooting model (see below) and was inspired to have a go. Love the idea of asymmetrical detail. Really fits with the ship -

And my attempt -

I might do some pretty renders, but this is the umpteenth build I've done of her to get her screen right. This is close, and I'm happy.

Comments and the like welcome.

PS - the build came in at exactly 800 meters ;-)

So here's a question - how many of you have seen this?

better resolution -

Roger Murray-Leach's original design for the Liberator - yes the orientation is correct, the ship was flipped so that the shooting model could be attached to an armature. And whilst the basic shape was kept, a lot of the surface detail was changed (no doubt to keep things easy for the build).

Anyway - that engine looks like it's going to be fun -

More on this as it develops :-)

The proto-Liberator as originally designed by Roger Murray-Leach is coming along nicely. Blasters and pylons still need a lot of work, but I don't think this is going to be a heavy build.

Anyways, comments welcome - more later.
