Ivan Thursday 11th September: Ivan Vasilyevich Changes His Profession

The same actor plays Bunsha and the tsar. Bunsha has obvious speech defects unlike the tsar.

I liked the blurry time warp effect.

The bells are playing the song Evening Bells, and then it is Moscow Nights. Of course, the thief can't go without playing it to the end.

A nice touch - I would have missed that if you hadn't explained it.

I liked the tune he was playing.

This Fedya is played by Saveliy Kramarov who also was in some American movies. Maybe you know the movie 2010: The Year We Make Contact. I haven't seen it, but it is said that he played there.

It hasn't changed! But you have. You'd need to forget everything between then and now to get the right terrorised effect.

Excuse me? Eight letters instead of four? Then Russians must have a different definition of 'short' !

The singing is great, but I'm not sure the song is as innocent as it sounds.

'Short' isn't the right description. It's more of a familiar name, that one would use for a close friend or a child. I think the same must be true for Ivan.

I wish we could see more of Ivan the Severe discovering 70's Russia.

It's a pet name for John then, used when people know each other well, as Taiellin says - like Vanyusha.

This picture in Shurik's flat was made by the famous artist Ilya Repin. It is called Ivan the Terrible and his son Ivan. According to the famous version Ivan the Terrible killed his son in rage. He hit him with a stick. Now though this version is questioned. There is evidence that he was sick at that time. Nobody knows for sure.

Hitler kaput is the famous phrase. It means the end to the Hitler. It is not quite right, but everyone knows it.

They gave this region away in the play.

I did wonder - thank you. Who is the Boris that he was accusing of wanting to make himself Tsar?

Boris Godunov. He was a regent and took care of Feodor, the son of Ivan the Terrible. After the death of Feodor Boris Godunov became the tsar.
