I didn't think God rest ye merry gentlemen was so old a carol I think that's in their church. But, says Wikipedia, an early version is found in a Bodleian manuscript of the 1650s. |

I didn't think God rest ye merry gentlemen was so old a carol Apparently dates from 1650. Is that old enough for you? I think it's cos it's so inextricably linked to Dickens and Victorian times. Silflay hraka, u embleer rah!

It's going to be so bleak when he has to go back to school - for both of them.

It's a pity there aren't any more. There's a film of the second book, with Maggie Smith as the granny I think - I'm sure I've seen it on TV - but I don't think there are any more series. |

THere's a film with Patricia Routledge available. Do you want to watch it next week? "You're not sulking, I hope?"

The tune of Ding Dong Merrily is medieval, I think. Well it would be with those hey nonny nonny noes in it. There aren't any in any version I've sung. Only gloooooooooorias. Also, the words of Ding Dong are Victorian, althougn the tune is older.. "You're not sulking, I hope?"

It's really about the atmosphere, and the growing friendship with the children - I liked the ending, where they are all coming and listening to the story too. |

The film of the second book (if we want to see it) is called From Time to Time. |

I have definitely sung a version with the nonnies in but then I do come from a very backward part of the country. Silflay hraka, u embleer rah!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6DN4...6DN41UjO2g Is this the film you mean? I think that's the one Anne mentioned, yes. Maybe I should post both links on the next thread and see what happens! "You're not sulking, I hope?"
