Paul Darrow's crocodile
Hugbot
An extinct Australian crocodile was actually named after Paul Darrow: Baru darrowi. And no, this is not a coincidence. Just scroll down to the second page and read the few sentences under "Etymology".

This is further confirmed by this article; unfortunately, it also confused Baru darrowi and Baru wickeni and states erroneously that Baru wickeni were the scientific name for Baru darrowi, which doesn't make sense. Baru wickeni is a related species.

Naming a crocodile after an actor who is best known for a character with a certain snarky bite seems very appropriate!

Is their no end to the things that you know, huggy? I have called you Mr Memory Man elsewhere on Horizon but it seems I must rename you the All-Knowing Boy Wonder. Evil or otherwise....Frown

Yes, it’s true. It happened because we B7 fans raised the money to make it happen. There was a patronage scheme to raise funds for research and discovery. If you donated … I forget, I think it was $5,000 … they would name an ancient fossil/creature after you.

Paul discusses it on the MJTV “The Actor Speaks” CD, in the Q&A section.

Side note, there was also a huge mining site here in Australia that had all the camps and prominent locations named after B7 characters. It’s detailed in a LoC in one of the old Horizon newsletters. I seem to recall a hand-drawn map was printed with it.

Some scans from the Zencon II program, Melbourne, 1988, with info about Baru darrowi.

You can always tell a Robert Jan Liberator illo. He always crammed in lots of surface detail.

Paul, Janet and Michael also went to New Zealand for Confederation, organised by Kathy Hanson & co., and featuring the infamous toenails/nostrils panel.

Tell us more JD. I was living in Singapore at the time and, unfortunately, arrived in Melbourne to see my thesis supervisor a week after Zencon had been on. If only I'd known! I gather the threesome much preferred NZ given what happened in Oz – and the horrible Melbourne weather. Tell us about the toenails and nostrils.

In the meantime, here are some other bits and pieces: J+P+M at Zencon and fun in NZ.

I've got the con tapes but no way to digitise from VHS anymore. If I can get them transferred, I'll let you know. It's been on my mind for a while as there's a tiny bit Tyce might like, where 'Anna Grant' sings a filk of "Waterloo" to Paul - though of course instead of "Waterloo" the lyrics are "Bartolomew" ("I was the spy and you never knew" etc). She doesn't get far into the song, which is a pity as I wanted to hear more of it.

From memory, nostrils get mentioned at one point, which makes Janet go 'ugh' and tell the boys not to talk about nostrils, so from then on that's all Paul does, though quickly changing it to toenails, which Janet also felt was uncouth. It's been a loooong time but I do recall Paul D referring to the Nostromo from "Alien" as the Nostril-omo or some such.

Actually, now I think about it, I must have ripped some of the tape 'recently' as I was able to upload the 'Send in the Clowns' video for Sue to see. That's definitely on the back end of the video.

You mentioned the con tapes before JD and there being no way to digitise. I have an old tape of Mary Van Deusen's fan vids – Hotel California and Marvelous Toy – and my nearest and dearest found someone nearby who copied them over to DVD for a very reasonable price. No-one up there who can do that at all?

Oh yes, definitely. There's a great outfit I used to transfer all my father's old home movie film reels before he passed away and they did a great job. With VHS however I used to be able to do it myself but there's a few technical challenges these days. I have been thinking of sending it to the experts.

Kathy Hanson was the main driving force behind the con, or so I remember. Kathy was the editor of Down & Unsafe. She passed away many years ago now, so who knows what happened to the master tapes. Another reason why getting them archived has been on my mind.
