THE HORROR! THE HORROR! Good taste is vastly overrated. But even a committed crudder must occasionally concede that the gene pool of Jurassic classics extends further than bad B movies. The question is, then, to B or not to B movie? Yes, let’s cast a net a bit wider (good old Annette) and, once in a while, delve/dip into the 1930s horror catalogue of Universal Pictures. First up… Frankenstein Goes to Hollywood! Relax…and welcome to the pleasure dome as one tribe go to war-tch something influential that wasn’t only influenced by earlier movies but also influenced later ones – the reverse scenario not really being an option. I’m confusing myself – and you too. And possibly U2 if they’re reading this because they still haven’t found what they’re looking for due to navigation issues on the Horizon homepage. I digress. The film: Frankenstein (1931) with Boris ‘Bodger’ Karloff. Not Carl Orff. He was someone else. I digress. The date: Wednesday 18th March. The time: 7.47pm seems appropriate for this jumbo movie experience. British time, of course. We’ve got the Prime Meridian so that’s The Way It Is. Which was a Bruce Hornsby song. I digress. The plot: If you don’t know the plot, you’re watching the wrong film. Don’t waste our time. Go away. Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqQ0G...mp;t=2869s (70 minutes) Further reading: ‘Herbert West: Reanimator’, the influential 1922 short story by the inimitably influential US writer H P Lovecraft. Nothing to do with Lovejoy. He was a fictional antiques dealer. With a mullet. I digress. I'd digress to explain why I digress so much but won't on this occasion. I'd also say a little bit about despondency, but what would be the use? |

Sounds good to me, but I consider Frankenstein a classic. I would have thought Son of Frankenstein might be more in line with theme of it all. Such manic acting by one Basil Rathbone and the kid who plays his son! But still looking forward to the flat top monster, and oh, Boris Karloff, or William Henry Pratt, was one amazing actor.

Bad news, gang, I'm afraid. I can make it tonight. See you all, prim and primed, for kick-off at 7.47 (as advertised). Bring Monster Munch, of course. |

How omnipresent is Karloff's version of The Monster? The makeup is patented, so no non-MGM monster can look like that. Herman Munster gets away with it because the Television studio that made The Munsters was owned by MGM. And this restaurant is in Gary, Indiana about twenty miles from us. I have driven past it many times. They specialize in hot dogs (Franks) and root beer in Steins.

I recall reading that the shooting days were so long, and the makeup took so long to put on, that Karloff would sleep in the makeup, and while made up, couldn't eat, but only drink broth. Also, I recall reading that the first choice for the monster was Bella Lugosi, but he turned it down. This, along with his addiction to morphine, led to Bella's decline and Karloff's rise. . . Cockatoo? What Cockatoo? I don't see a Cockatoo! |

Well as a night off from Crud, the Universal monsters films are absolute classics. Looking forward to seeing if the film looks how I remrmber it. Cool b & w, scenes that are just clear cut works of art.
