IMHO, Collin Clive played him as already well round the bend.

Basil played Son of F as slowly going mad before your eyes.

Not quite sure. But I see that yet another version of Frankenstein was featured at the Academy Awards the other day. The monster seemed to be green.

I read that they did that as it was the only color that offered a corpse like pallor in the extant black and white film.
