Yes, I think you're right. Glimpses of horrors, not close-ups. Letting the audience invent their own version of whatever horrified them... including OSP's nightmares. "You're not sulking, I hope?"

I 'm sorry but... I LOVE QUATERMASS! As a serious question, what do you love about him? Well, he's a serious scientist with imagination which makes him more of a genius but dangerous too. However, he does get to show his caring sharing side at some point. Seriously he is a great creation as a character. He is definitely not a 2d boffin of the type you often see in these films.
