Quatermass II aka Enemy From Space (1957 film)
OneSparePart
Date: Thursday 8th June
Time: 7.45 ish

Brian Donleavy rides again as everyone's favourite Rocket scientist. His police sidekick, Lomax, is played, this time, by John Longden who is very much in the Jack Warner mould: stolid and dependable, an anchor to keep Quatermass grounded.

STORY: Quatermass, struggling to gain support for his project to colonise the moon, becomes involved in mysterious events in Winnerden Flats.
What are the meteorites that are falling in this area, where an industrial complex - strangely resembling Quatermass's moon project - is supposedly making synthetic food? Our doughty Professor calls for Lomax's help in trying to solve the mystery and soon finds that not everyone will come out of it alive!

Donleavy's 2nd outing as the Professor sees him ably supported again by well-known and well-loved actors from British cinema:
Sid James, Bryan "Nanette Newman" Forbes, William "sshhh, you know who" Franklyn, Charles Lloyd Pack, Percy Herbert, Michael Ripper.

I love these films in their own right but the ensemble cast is wonderful too.
Val Guest directs again but this time Nigel Kneale co-writes the screenplay, adapting his own TV play. It was filmed in Essex and around the Thames Estuary.

My favourite of the three films by quite a distance. What a brilliant name 'Quatermass' is. Franco-Belgian origin, I believe.* Not that I've ever met a 'Quatermass', mind, nor indeed expect to.

It's a tightly written screenplay. Pace is fast but still you don't feel as if the story is being rushed. I really can't wait for this one.

Oh, and in case the name seems familiar to anyone, Charles Lloyd Pack was indeed Trigger's dad (OFAH).

Apparently so, and not related to Quartermain, as in Allan, although they sound to me like garbled versions of the same thing.

Getting even more excited about this rewatch....

Evenin' all, by the way.

How's the picture quality on youtube. My dvd is terrible on these modern tvs. It's the night scenes that are worst.

There was a village there, but they must have pulled it down, she says calmly??? World War II has a lot to answer for!

AnneArthur
This all reminds me a lot of the Avengers. Mysterious research carried out in mysterious houses in the middle of nowhere. It must have been a very odd world to live in then.

They're taking the Carlisle road, and they've just found a roadblock.
