Presumably the (then) audience were familiar with what happened when people messed with things they didn't understand... especially things from Outer Space, and would be anticipating things going wrong. So the writers made it a cheerful, scientific adventure story...until the Thing starts eating them, or whatever it's going to do. All the more to shock you with, my dear!
