Finally - the Scorpio is done. I've left the hatch panel open as it helps with understanding the scale of this ship - in that it's small! Enjoy :-)

Oh wow, your Liberator is very nice! I did mine as low poly version to hide the lack of detail.

It's a strange craft to model, wouldn't you say? The colours seem to change a lot depending on the reference!

The very first 3D model I ever did was the Liberator - I ended up doing a slightly higher poly version as Star Trek Bridge Commander add-in. Compared with the current models, that add-in pack is quite... well, basic. But that was the best I could do at the time.

It looks deceptively simple as a ship - the primitives are cylinders and a sphere. But the devil is, as they say, in the detail and getting the shapes right.

A good source, or ref is the official blueprint pack available here from Horizon. it will certainly help you get a feel for the shapes. Colour-wise, the Liberator is basically white with contrasting hull panels. I chose to use a few more colours than normal so it will pick up and reflect light in interesting ways.

I have 20+ years of 3D modelling under my belt, but we all start out in the same place, making low poly models first. Keep at it, and have fun :-)

Where do you think the flight deck is on your version? Do you have an opinion?

I think you have to first consider how big the ship is. I've seen various estimates, from 200 meters to 1000 meters in terms of length. The lack of details, such as windows or a visible airlock makes it hard to work out, but there is a massive clue:

i.imgur.com/DLzfmwO.jpg

The London. It has a visible airlock, which we see people stand next to. This allows us to work out (based on a 2 meter height for the airlock door) that the London is 54.7 meters in length -

Playing around with things I get a rough scale of 780 meters in length for the Liberator -

i.imgur.com/YS2wX7a.jpg

Which looks about right.

TrekYards and others have suggested a length of 200 meters - which scales as -

i.imgur.com/KJYhpFX.jpg

Doesn't look right. Mind you, I personally don't think much of the way TrekYards get their info (ie, they guess).

So, anyway, with a ship sized at approximately 780 meters, I think the flight deck is probably in the forward part of the centre hull, before the intake vents. Would make sense for the Flight Deck to be in the centre mass of the hull, added protection when in combat, and easier to reach for the crew. It's difficult to be more exact, but the Liberator also gave off a big ship vibe, and I don't think we saw much of the interior due to budget constraints. The crew described her as a large ship with a vast interior. Does this mean there was more than one deck? Yes, I think it means that. Horizon, via their own Technical Manual, acknowledges that as well.

One of the things that's been bugging me about my take on the Liberator is that I got the proportions wrong... so, let's try again -

I definitely agree after watching the show and reconstructing it in 3D, the Liberator gives off big ship energy. No way it is 200m. There are all sorts of unexplored rooms in it.

I also wondered about the green sphere. It's like probably the reactor or the energy banks or fuel or just some cool green goo that the ship needs to live. Maybe a giant greenhouse. Did you ever decide? It could outside chance be the engine imo but the three extruding modules give off engine vibes to me. I also keep swapping the weapon from the tip of the centre hull to the three nodules! Or two are engines and the "top one" is the weapon...

All these questions come up when you model I find!

I do like a more dynamic sweep on the struts that connect the three modules which I think you've achieved here. I also really like on yours the three "engine' (as I think of them) nodules are "fully chunky". I don't think they're out-of-proportion or anything but they are full sized, if that makes sense. My way of judging a 3D model of the Liberator is how much "motorcycle energy" it is giving me. The Liberator should be cool and it all hinges on making those three nodules feel powerful.

I'm really quite taken with the texturing on the model that flies out of the TV screen in the Blu Ray trailer at 14s. I'm reasonably sure it is a 3D model. They have lit it and scratched it up in a lovely 1978 way.

I'm pretty sure the green sphere is the main engine, with the pylons supporting the three Neutron Blasters. Do they contain engines within them? Not sure. They were (are) powerful weapons. A billion years ago I did the Blake's 7 Ship Pack for the "Star Trek: Bridge Commander" game, and given the size of the blasters on a ship that's around the 750-meter mark, they are almost one-shot guns. That seems to fit what we saw in the show. But yes, there are three blasters, they were seen to fire within the show. The ship also had a complement of "Seeker" missiles - mentioned in the episode "Redemption." That same episode also showed us sister ships to the Liberator (two interceptor-type craft and another ship like the Liberator).

The size issue doesn't surprise me - but the fact people ignore the screen evidence is annoying. TrekYards have a lot to answer for with the video they did on the Liberator. I did send them some info, but they chose to ignore it. Rude.

I used the images from the Technical Manual and imported them into 3DS Max to get the proportions right. Hat off to the peeps who did the Technical Manual, as the shape fits the show spot on. Should have done that from the start, lol.

The remastered FX for the Blu-Ray are all practical effects - no CGI. I was surprised by that myself, but there is a link to an account on X (Twitter) that shows the models being finished and filmed. Awesome stuff!

I'm a bit worried about the scale on this one. On the one hand, they were powerful ships able to subdue targets with a few plasma bolts, on the other hand, the Liberator could take them out with a single shot. The few times they were seen on screen together the scale changed. Anyways, comments always welcome.

And of course, having it meant I could do this -
