Crud Club: Historic First Rewatch (Weds 30th Oct, 7.45pm)
Cygnus Bazza
Presumably due to other commitments, Prince Harry has declined (i.e. hasn’t replied to) my invitation to formally open the Crud Film Club and attend its inaugural session. So it’s down to me to say…

LET’S DO THIS!

Time/date: 7.45pm (GMT), Wednesday 30th October. (NOTE: Opening ceremony starts at 7.35pm)

Event: The big one! The first convening of the CFC to delight in the defective, promote the pitiful and indulge in the utterly inexplicable.

So what are we watching/rewatching?

To crank up the excitement a further notch, let’s have a pointless duel!

The Wasp Woman (1959, 73 minutes); produced/directed by the great Roger Corman, who was clearly still on a learning curve. YouTube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpPAN...&t=39s

or…

The Creeping Terror (my italics) (1964, 77 minutes); produced/directed by and starring the superbly named Vic Savage (which is what I’m seriously considering changing my own name to). YouTube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipVLl...mp;t=2624s

We'll have a quick show of virtual hands at the opening ceremony to decide which we're in the mood for.

Synopses: I’ve decided not to do any of those spoiler-rich summaries that M1 excels at. The first film is about a woman who turns into a wasp, The second is about a terror that creeps, and might give you some leftfield home-furnishing ideas.

I've got it marked down on my calendar! Hurrah! I've seen them all and must look up a few films to suggest to the Crud Club. Howl long before we have our own secret handshake and t-shirts? So looking forward to this. And thank you for the YouTube links. Helps!

I vote for The Creeping Terror as it's so outrageous. The foam rubber and carpet made monster who sucks up people whole and has a space ship which doesn't seem to have a door, if I remember correctly, and the humans who investigate have to bend and stoop under the ship to somehow get in!

Excellent! I kind of like the punchier version of the club's name! I propose we go with 'Crud Club'. Any objections? Good - APPROVED! And yes, gotta be 'merch' in the offing. Secret handshake? Definitely. The more secret secrets we secretly keep secret, the better. Edit: we could do with a strapline. Maybe 'CRUD CLUB...The Home of High-Class Hokum'.

I'm also moved to get behind The Creeping Terror for our initial, All Hallows Eve Eve salvo. Haven't seen it in ages. And I must admit the opening to The wOSP Woman is a bit slug-gish. (Insect joke.)

Presumably Roger Corman's learning curve included being forced to read Kafta at school, being dumped unceremoniously by his biggest crush, and having a bad experience with wasps at a picnic. The resulting dream came out something like his film, but worse.

Paula
I'm going to be making up a listing of favorite bad films in the next couple of days but I need to do a bit of research before. But, looking forward to this experience no end! We just watched the Beast from 20 Thousand Fathoms last night and topped that off with three episodes of Ultraman Returns, the 60's kids show from Japan. I can't say who exactly cornered the market in crud films, but the Japs are ahead, with mentions of Korea, Russia/Finland, Italy and of course American films from the minds of Roger Corman, or Ed Wood!

It maybe a bit high quality for the Crud list. Laughable (by today's standards) effects don't necessarily make a film crud. It has genuinely scary moments. I rate it a bit above the crud.

Oh, another classic, the Crawling Eye with Forrest Tucker! Love that one!

Crud Club's all about the quest for la crème de la crud. Films with real crudibility. And by launching with 'The Creeping Terror', we've set the bar incrudibly high. It really does make 'The Wasp Woman' look like 'The Shawshank Redemption'.

Edit: Confident the Club Committee will award this one its highly sought-after Five-Star 'Crock of Crud' Certification.

Just one day to go. I feel the hand of history on my shoulder. But it might just be where my rucksack was digging in in Winchester yesterday.

INteresting. One doesn't often see a sentence with a double 'in' in it. One wonders what you were up to in Winchester with a heavy rucksack...

Okay, will try to make this if not too busy, it is right up Paula's and my alleys.

Brilliant! A most cordial welcome to the Crud Crew! This is all highly promising. I'd even go as far as declaring crud recrudescent! In fact, I am unanimous in that.

We plumped for 'The Creeping Terror' in the end.

Just checking I'm all set. Bubbly water, semi-pescatarian nuggets, carpet swatches...

Ah, but does the carpet match the drapes? (you'll get it when you see the monster.)

In homage to MST3K I may take to calling it the Cheesy Cinema Club (same initials).

We Crudders are a very broad-based and obnoxiously tolerant congregation

A quick google might indicate that this is the only movie metropolitan international pictures ever made.

Our Rogue Member's here! We're good to go!

Fellow crud-lovers!
I come not to bury crud, but to praise it. The man that hath no crud in himself… let no such man be trusted. But uneasy lies the head that wears the crud. May this move us to affirm both our faith in the creed of crud and our disdain for basic competence in movie-making. As the Bard once said (in a now-lost folio): ARE WE ALL UP FOR A CRACKING CROCK OF CRUD?

I'm here and ready for the onslaught of said film. Haven't seen this one for a while but one simply cannot forget how the terror sucked in humans like a Hoover. You'd think it would spit out the shoes- but it never did. Hello everyone. I'm very proud to be at the inaugural of the Crud Club.

Are there press here, to cover the launch? Fob 'em off with an old quote, OSP. One of the Shakespeare ones.

The 2 minutes where Vic takes his mate round to meet his wife may be the greatest-ever 2 minutes of cinema, period. But not of period cinema

A bit put out that Prince Harry didn't show up to cut the ribbon so to speak on our nifty little Club. Oh, well. We got each other!
