B7 rights acquired, hopes to do a rebooted series: Deadline article Interesting - if they now have the rights, does that mean Big Finish's licence has expired? Given the limited cast pool I think they probably feel they have exhausted what they can do with it. That said, Jason Haigh-Ellery is involved in the new venture. |

Maybe they are distinct rights issues, thinking of how Big Finish still putting out Doctor Who content when a new series is also around. |

Given the limited cast pool I think they probably feel they have exhausted what they can do with it. That said, Jason Haigh-Ellery is involved in the new venture. Big Finish purchased their rights from the estate of Terry Nation. Later, they did a separate deal with Chris Boucher to use his one-off characters (as a BBC-employed script editor, he never had the rights to any regulars). Big Finish never had the full BBC rights. It's why they couldn't use Soolin, Slave or Scorpio, or any of the one-off characters from the 24 episodes not written by Nation or Boucher. It will be interesting to see if anything happens with this latest projected reboot. We've been here before! Vote Og.

Well, the addition of Jason Haigh-Ellery does raise my eyebrow a bit. I assume he was in discussions while he was at Chicago TARDIS, where we know and see him each year. He certainly kept his mouth shut about this- but then, he is good at that and won't say one word until things are ironed out. I can confirm that Big Finish has the rights to some of Blake's 7 (see TT's post above) and they 'curate' the estate of Terry Nation now so having Jason mentioned does sound legit. As to going forward with either the original program or doing a sort of next generation addition, I'll have to see it to believe it, as throughout the years the fans have been teased, and then disappointed a few times at least hearing about a possible reboot of the series. But I do have to admit, given the three men who are attempting it this time, this might be it. Do I like the idea? Well, I've always been on the side of leave it alone as it was impeccable as it was, but with these well known and experienced men on board for a possible reboot, it does made one ponder what could be!

So many years have passed now that I would regard any reboot as a completely separate entity to the original series. Could it work? Yes, if done correctly and with a decent enough cast of actors. |

Where are they going to find another Chris Boucher to keep the thing on track? And let's hope they employ a better class of writers (like James Goss and Una McCormack!) than some of the sad 'shoot-em-up' boy racers of the past. Cautiously looking forward to hearing more, but not getting my hopes up. Yet.

"Spaceships and snogging." I don't remember much of the latter! No, neither do I... Before the rumoured reboot, on a side note, I've never forgiven that particular writer for The Turing Test, I remember how excited I was when the first Liberator Chronicles were released and then I listened to that... which I thought was... well, just my opinion of course... suffice to say my excitement became a consuming void of angry disappointment... but that was many moons ago and now there's (yet again) the prospect of a TV reboot... For me, the only possible plus would be that it would probably get some people interested in the original series... B7 was of course of it's time, and for me a great deal of my continued enjoyment of it, along with many other shows from way back when, is the style of TV in those days which is long gone, times have moved on, and a wonderful generation of actors who looked like real people, instead of as they seem to me these days,... like actors. As I think Chris Boucher said, at it's worst it was terrible, ok, hands up, yes... at it's best it was as good as anything else out there, in my opinion actually better than anything else out there. The BluRays with the enhanced effects, which I'm enjoying very much, are as much as I imagine can be done with the original and as much as I want to see, really. Have an original idea, why not? And make a series about that instead. "Time really is getting short, you know..."

Sleeping on it, I am thinking this is just going to end up like the other times- a big nothing. Call me a nay-sayer, but I have this gut feeling nothing will come of this. Time will tell.

It's rather an odd article. Some of it I disagree with, and other parts seem commonsense or commonplace. Surely all productions try to cast suitable actors? I notice he's mentioned again how Chris Boucher explained you have to give Avon two motivations so there is that ambiguity in what he does and why. I always feel surprised he says this like it's some secret revelation. You had to be told this? Possible he feels there is some kind of B7 mantle that's been passed down to him. "And Terry bestowed it on Chris.... who bequeathed it to me." Or maybe it's just sour grapes on my part because he gets to write B7 and I don't. Boo! Swiz! |

"Spaceships and snogging." I don't remember much of the latter! Indeed not. Jenna could have been stood naked on the top of the Cipher Machine, and Blake would have strode onto the Flight Deck and asked her what the latest decryptions were, without noticing a thing. Vote Og.

Having been given the right what to do with them? There are lots of options: a full remake with changes to mark modern sensibilities; a prequel or contination? I suppose a sort of spin off featuring some but not all the characters would be a possibility too. |

As for writers... I love to see Jed Mercurio try his hand to something new. He has the great premise, character backgrounds - flawed but strong , corruption, etc .... he needs something to do new after Line of Duty series 7. Jed M would NOT JedWood

Try this link https://uk.news.yahoo.com/open-letter...00717.html Cheers Space Rat! ![]() Confirms what I thought - Simon Guerrier, like most of the Big Finish writers, is primarily a Doctor Who fan with only a limited understanding of B7. He gets Avon a little better than most of their writers (Big Finish often made Avon too heroic and too anti-Federation), but only because he read up on it. But he also made basic errors in his scripts, such as Liberator suddenly having an observation deck in The Turing Test. Er, wrong spaceship! Don't get me wrong, he contributed some of the best Liberator Chronicles - but more because he's a decent writer rather than a big B7 fan.The Big Finish writer who, to me, seemed to be a genuine fan of B7 was James Goss. He really understood what drove each character. Goss got e.g. Servalan in a way no other Big Finish writer managed. EDIT: Oh, and Peter Anghelides fully understood B7 as well. He is obviously a fully-fledged, card-carrying B7 fan. Again, it shows! Edited by trevor travis on 31-01-2026 13:47 Vote Og.

But he also made basic errors in his scripts, such as Liberator suddenly having an observation deck in The Turing Test. Er, wrong spaceship! It often feels like the BF crowd are ST fans rather than B7 fans. Given the chance to play in the unique space that is B7, they want to convert everything to Star Trek. The 'recent' story with Tarrant as Federation captain was full of "Belay that!" and so on. I'm not the retiring sort oft-given to an attack of the vapours, but it was physically upsetting to hear. And when were bridges ever mentioned in B7, except of the type seen in Headhunter? It's so frustrating, knowing it really could have been miles better with such little corrections. |

Cavan Scott and Mark Wright, the writing team who among other things wrote Armageddon Storm, I'd want them to have a chance at writing a reboot or at least a few episodes. And I say yes please to anything James Goss or Peter Anghelides would be part of. Excellent writers, both. Resist the Host

Avon is so out of character in The Armageddon Storm - he's way too heroic in that story. Hardly any of the BF writers could get Avon right. Paul did occasionally infer he didn't think Avon should be doing some of the things he was doing, but he just got on with the job in hand. Vote Og.
