CRUD CLUB: HIGH-TENSILE TENTH REWATCH, Weds 21st January 2026
Cygnus Bazza
High time and highly timely to turn our gaze towards a thought-provoking parable brought to us by the same non-hive mind that gave us ‘The Wasp Woman’: – the inimitable Roger ‘Cor, Man!’ Corman.

LET’S DO THIS!

WHAT Are We Watching? 'IT CONQUERED THE WORLD' (1956). If you’re worried about spoilers, don’t read that title. As we’ll see, this really should have been called ‘The Number of the Cucumber’.

WHEN Are We Watching It? Weds 21st January, 19.45 (Blighty Time). Salad days, eh?

WHY Are We Watching It? Because Paula 'recommended' it. And M1/HGV agreed with her. I’m presuming it also has Brad’s tacit approval.

HOW Are We Watching It? With our customary contempt for social norms and trademark disdain for public mores. Think of this as our winter offensive, with a definite emphasis on the ‘offensive’ if OSP turns up.

WHERE Are We Watching It? YouTube, of course. Just click on this link and stand well back: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UV1JA...&t=56s

WHAT Can We Expect? Pear-shaped cucumber creature. Bicycle. Blowtorch. Lee Van Cleef. And Russ Bender. I know. But it’s only an hour and nine minutes long, so we’ll have it all wrapped up in good time to get back to reflecting on what’s already gone cucumbrously pear-shaped with our New Year’s resolutions.

DID YOU KNOW? The Lake District is, technically, part of The World, but The Potteries isn’t.

Actually, it has my vocal approval.

Lee Van Cleef with hair. Pete Graves as the scientist. Beverly Garland in peril. And a monster they painted bright red.... forgetting they were filming in black and white..... What's not to like.

Would you Adam & Eve it? Checked out Russ B's extensive filmography and first in the list is a movie called 'Paula'.

He also did one called 'Bradlands of Montana' but that may be a typo.

Turns out Russ Bender has some intriguing entries in his extensive Crudiculum Vitae. Eye-catchers include War of the Colossal Beast, The Invasion of the Saucermen and The Navy vs. The Night Monsters. Crud Club triple bill right there.

Anyone for CRUDFEST '26?

Amazingly, we've seen all of the films Russ has been in and I'd be hard pressed to pick him out of a line up! I happen to like Invasion of the Saucermen and Navy vs. the Night Monsters. Two films we could watch for Crud club any time.

Crudfest '26? Sounds interesting.

I'd describe Russ's acting as 'wooden' or 'deadpan' but that'd be unfair to wood, pans (live or dead) and wooden pans in particular. There's a strong case for a Russ Bender Stage at CRUDFEST. I mean, where would what I'm sure the French call 'le cinéma du crud' be without the bit part? And let's not forget 'The War of the Colossal Man'. Mind you, I really wish I could.

Reporting for duty.

Will Russ Bender render a performance of splendour? Or will they remember to return Bender to sender?

Paula
Well gang, are we doing this? I'm all set up and ready to delve into this steaming pile of Crud!

I reckon Lee Van Cleef is a stage name dreamt up when he heard a French person telling someone called Cliff to leave Anne

I wonder if there will be any over the shoulder shots in this film? Grin

How long did it take you to come up with that one?

It’s the men and women in white coats. A familiar sight to you, OSP, I’d have thought

Thank you. We laughed our heads off about that one.

Thanks, Everyone OK so far?

The film makes me hanker for the 50's. The McCarthy trial, Communism- really bad home decor... square suits for men....

I can do really bad home decor, if that's what you want.
