There has been a lot of comments, over the years, about Bill Shatner overacting but I think he is absolutely brilliant. He gets the nuances of emotional acting. I agree. I prefer some over acting with good story over wooden acting with weak story and cgi effects to make up for it. Agreed, I’ll take old-fashioned effects with a good story and actors any day. Story covers a multitude of bad sets and questionable effects! Yes look at films,stage plays,programs with 1 or few actors,1 or 2 sets Such as I Claudius,etc cannot beat good story,acting etc I plan to live forever,or die trying.

I wonder if this episode was inspired by The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde? They use classic literature a lot. I love the references At least this episode ended better for Kirk than Jekyll and Hyde’s story. Hope of a good ending is part of Trek's magic. It’s mostly wholesome fun,with morals,which is sorely lacking-these days I plan to live forever,or die trying.

When aired first time on the BBC as a kid I was allowed to stay up (school night ,think Wednesday) and watch it with my mum,my younger brother didn’t I plan to live forever,or die trying.
